On its foundation rest the cornerstones

of freedom, democracy and sustainable human development.”

Universal Design for Learning

OVERVIEW/ INTRODUCTION:
Give students the power to learn in a way that works for them. Create an experience for their
needs and preferences to let them feel empowered. Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a
framework that promotes inclusive education by providing a flexible approach to teaching and
learning that accommodates all learners regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, or learning
styles. It is designed to remove barriers and provide equal opportunities and access to
education for all students regardless of their diverse needs and abilities.
The concept of Universal design is rooted in the idea of creating an environment that is
accessible and meets the needs of everyone. In the same vein, UDL seeks to ensure that
learning environments are designed to cater to the needs of all learners. The framework
recognizes that learners have different learning styles, abilities, and preferences, and that these
differences should be celebrated and accommodated instead of being a barrier.
UDL is implemented through three main principles: multiple means of representation, multiple
means of engagement, and multiple means of action and expression. These principles promote
a classroom environment that allows every student to learn and engage to the best of their
ability.
Multiple means of representation involve providing different ways of presenting information so
that students with diverse abilities and backgrounds can understand them. Some students may
benefit from visual aids, while others may prefer auditory aids, and still, others may need to
engage with learning materials through hands-on experiences.
In conclusion, UDL is essential for inclusive education as it provides an approach that
accommodates all learners regardless of their abilities, backgrounds, or learning styles. This
framework promotes equity and ensures that all learners receive a quality education that
enables them to thrive and reach their full potential. By implementing UDL, we can create a
classroom environment that caters to the unique needs of each student, celebrates their diverse
abilities, and promotes their success.

LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this module, you are expected to:

1. To know the Diversity of each students
2. Identify evidence-based practices, curriculum, environments, teaching models,
and technologies that support the development and learningof each young child,
including those of diverse abilities
3. To see resources and assessments that work for everyone.

LEARNING EXPERIENCES AND SELF-ASSESSMENT ACTIVITIES (SAA)

Universal Design for Learning (UDL) is a framework developed by CAST, an Understood
founding partner. UDL guides the design of learning experiences to proactively meet the needs
of all learners. When you use UDL, you assume that barriers to learning are in the design of the
environment, not in the student. UDL is based on brain science and evidence-based educational
practices. It also leverages the power of digital technology.
Imagine this: Your students are going to write an essay on the stages of butterfly
metamorphosis.
Some students have seen butterflies grow through the different stages at a local science
museum. These students are excited to share what they know. Other students don’t know
anything about butterflies and are nervous about writing on this topic. And some students don’t
like to write — they dread this activity from the moment you say “essay.”
In any class, you know there’s a wide range of enthusiasm, background, and skills among your
students. When you plan with this range in mind, you can approach the lesson in several ways.

Task 3

1. In your own understanding what is Universal Design for Learning?

No student in our classroom is "average". By planning our lessons for the average student, we
are disservicing all of our students. Each student has unique learning needs.

USING UDL & TECHNOLOGY

The principles of UDL allow the teacher to create flexible lessons, designed to suit the students
in the classroom. Rather than adapting for individual students during the lesson, the lesson is
designed so that all students can be successful. There is flexibility built into the lesson.

Technology provides an amazing platform for implementing UDL.

Equality
The assumption is that everyone
benefits from the same supports.
This is equal treatment.

Equity
Individuals are given different
supports to make it possible for
them to have equal access to the
game, thus producing equity.

Justice
All 3 can see the game without
supports or accomodations
because the cause(s) of the
inequity was addressed. The
systemic barrier has been
removed.

THE 3 UDL PRINCIPLES

The WHY: Multiple Means of Engagement

•Allow the students choice in their tasks (provide authentic tasks to choose from)
•Create opportunities for students to set their own goals, and self-monitor their
progressions
• Create a space where students can challenge themselves, and model failure and
perseverance
• Offer mastery-oriented feedback and allow the students to self-assess and reflect

The WHAT: Multiple Means of Representation

• Do not assume background knowledge
•Highlight patterns, big ideas, critical features, and relationships
• Present course content: visually, verbally, and graphically
Task 2
•Guide information processing
• Offer options for students to aquire their knowledge in various ways

1.When they develop goals using the principles of UDL, what is the main thing

•Vary how students demonstrate their learning, so that it is authentic to them
• Offer various levels of support for each unique learner
• Guide appropriate goal-setting & model students to monitor their own progress

Task 1

1. Briefly describe Universal Design for Learning. Make sure to include the three
principles of UDL.

SUMMARY/KEY POINTS
Universal Design for Learning is an educational framework based on research in the
learning sciences, including cognitive neuroscience, that guides the development of
flexible learning environments and learning spaces that can accommodate individual
learning differences.
Multiple means of engagement. For purposeful, motivated learners, stimulate interest
and motivation for learning. ...
Multiple means of representation. For resourceful, knowledgeable learners, present
information and content in different ways. ...
Multiple means of action and expression.
SAA ANSWER SHEETS (WRITE THIS ON A SEPARATE PAPER)

1. What is your understanding about the topic Universal Design for Learning?

2. What exactly is UDL?

3. Give the 3 UDL principles and example it

END OF MODULE ASSESSMENT (EMA) (WRITE THIS ON A SEPARATE PAPER)

Essay.
Universal design for learning (UDL) is a teaching approach that works to accommodate the
needs and abilities of all learners and eliminates unnecessary hurdles in the learning process.

Give at least minimum of 200 words about the impact and importance of UDL to the teachers
and students.
