Clearly, each of the numbers 0. 6, 0.85, 6.38 and 165.014 is a decimal. A decimal has two parts : Whole Number Part and Decimal Part. These parts are separated by a dot (), called the Decimal Point. In a decimal number, the whole number part is to the left of the de decimal part is to the right of it. lecimal point and the For example, in 58.643, we have : Whole number part = 58 and decimal part = 643, The absence of any of these parts is shown by 0. Thus, we write .84 as 0.84, And, we write 73 as 73,0 89 ‘Scanned with CamScanner——— Also, we read (0.84 as decimal eight four (ii) 18.06 Jeon point zero six. Like Decimals: mals having equal number of decimal places are called like decimals, () 98,6.5,4.3 and 0,7 are like decimals, each having (14.56, 13.08 and 9.41 are like decimals, each having two decimal places, (ii) 0.438, 6.984, 11.052 are like deci places. Examples : one decimal place, als, each having three decimal Unlike Decimals : Decimals havin, i different number of decimal places are called unlike decimals. For example : It is clear that the decimals 5.69, 3.147 and 0.8 contain different number of decimal places. So, these are unlike decimals. An Important Result : Any number of extra zeros put at the end of a decimal number does not change its value. For example : 2.3 300 as : and 2.300 = —— - 10° °° 00 = io 2" 1000 10 Also any whole number ean be written as a decimal number, For example : 39 = 39.0 = 39.00, ete Example 1. Convert 9.6, 14.75, 0.862 and 126.09 into like decimals. Solution: Maximum number of decimal places in given numbers is 3. So. we convert each given decimal into one having 3 decimal places by annexing zeros, We may write : 9.6 = 9.600, 14.75 = 14.750, 0.862 = 0.862 and 126.09 = 126.090. Clearly, 9.600, 14.750, 0.862 and 126.090 are like decimals. COMPARISON OF DECIMALS Suppose we have to compare two decimals. Then, we proceed according to the follov steps. 92 lie oer a ‘Scanned with CamScanner| step 1: Convert the given decimals into like decimals. Step }* a: First compare the whole number parts. step 7* he decimal with the greater whole number part is greater. step 3# Ifthe whole number parts are equal, compare the tenths digits. Pe. he decimal with the bigger digit in the tenths place is greater, Step 4: Ifthe tenths digits are equal, compare the hundredths digits, and so on, Example 2. Compare the decimals 83.64 and 69.87. Solution: The given decimals are 83.64 and 69.87. Let us compare their whole number part, 83 > 69. 83.64 > 69.87. Clearly Example 3, Compare 27.8 and 27.59. Solution; The given decimals as like decimals are 27.80 and 27.59. Their whole number parts are equal. Let us now compare their tenths digits. Clearly, 8 tenths > 5 tenths. +. 27.80 > 27.59. Hence, 27.8 > 27.59. Example 4. Write the following decimals in an ascending order : 4.73, 7.06, 0.8, 0.425 and 8.3. ‘The maximum number of decimal places in given decimals is 3. So, we convert each given decimal to have 3 places of decimals, by annexing zeros They become : 4.730, 7.060, 0.800, 0.425 and 8.300. Clearly, 0.425 < 0.800 < 4.730 < 7.060 < 8.300 or 0.425 < 0.8 < 4.73 < 7.06 < 8.3. Hence, the given decimals in an ascending order are : 0.425, 0.8, 4.73, 7.06 and 8.3. + _ exercise 5 8 ——_ . Step 3: Add as in the case of whole numbers. i ints in the Step 4: In the sum, put the decimal point directly under the decimal points addends. Example 1. Add : 8.6, 23.75, 138.06 and 9.784. ; Solutio Converting the given decimals into like deci decimal, we get : 8.600, 23.750, 138.060 and 9.784. Subtraction of Decimals Working Rule: Step 1: Step 2: Step 3: Step 4: Example 2. Solution :, Example 3. Solution : Convert the given decimals into like decimals, Write the smaller number under the larger in column form in such a way that the decimal points of both the decimals are in the same column Subtract as in the case of whole numbers, In the difference put the decimal point directly under the decimal points of the given numbers. Subtract 34.76 from 52.1 Converting the given decimals into like decimals, each having 2 places of decimal, we get 34.76 and 52.10. Writing them in column form and subtracting, we get : 52.10 - 34.76 17.34 Hence, (52.1 — 34.76) ‘Simplify : 48.6 ~ 23.48 + 108.57 - 78.9. Writing each of the given numbers with two decimal places, we get : Given expression = 48.60 - 23.48 + 108.57 — 78.90. = (48.60 + 108.57) — (23.48 + 78.90) Now: 157.17 48.60 23.48 ~ 10238 +108.57 and + 78.90 54.79" 157.17 102.38 Given expression = 157.17 - 102.38 = 54.79 Hence, 48.6 - 23.48 + 108.57 — 78.9 = 54.79. 98 Se ‘Scanned with CamScannerBerea TT tl MeAEROISE Sipe seca EH (1) 0.83, 8.07, 17.9, 294.678 (iv) 9.38, 3.895, 109.5, 72.87, 0,005 2.
