SUBJECT: Life Sciences GRADE: 11

THEME: Environmental studies TERM: 4

TOPIC: Human Impact on the environment WEEK: Week 2
CONTENT AND CONCEPTS DATE: 10 October 2024

Water quality
Factors reducing water quality include:
- Eutrophication and algae bloom
- Pollution of water through domestic, agriculture and industrial
use
- Mining
- Thermal pollution

OBJECTIVES:
By the end of the lesson, learners should be able to:
- Define Eutrophication and thermal pollution.
- Explain how human activities affect water quality (e.g. eutrophication, mining, thermal pollution).
- Discuss how poor water quality affects ecosystems and human health.
Duration: 30 minutes

Homework
Many parts of South Africa are facing a water crisis
1. Write a brief summary of the water crisis facing South Africa? (4)
2. How do poor farming practices affect water availability? (4)
3. Name 4 factors that influence water quality on Earth? (4)

Corrections
1. Write a brief summary of the water crisis in South Africa. (4)
South Africa faces a severe water crisis due to its limited freshwater resources and growing
demand. Factors such as prolonged droughts, climate change, pollution, and poor
infrastructure contribute to water scarcity. Additionally, overuse of water for agriculture
and industrial purposes, coupled with population growth, further stresses the country's
water supply, leading to a shortage of clean, accessible water for many communities.

2. How do poor farming practices affect water availability? (4)

Poor farming practices, such as over-irrigation, excessive use of chemical fertilizers, and
pesticides, lead to water wastage and contamination. Runoff from farms carries chemicals
into rivers and dams, causing pollution and eutrophication, which depletes oxygen levels in
the water, harming aquatic life. These practices also deplete groundwater resources,
reducing the overall availability of clean water.
3. Factors that influence water quality on Earth?
o Eutrophication and algae bloom
o Pollution of water through domestic, agriculture and industrial use
o Mining
o Alien plants
o Thermal pollution
