Week 3 Workshop Plan – Skills input

Aim

The aims of this session are

 to check that students understand the types of information sources they should be using
and those that they should not be using,
 to introduce students to how to find journal articles using journal databases and how to
search for a specific article. This will help them when searching for an article for their critical
review.
1. Use slides 2 and 3 to stress the importance of using sources that are both academic and reliable.
I am sure that you will have your own examples of postgraduates using inappropriate sources
such as Wikipedia and sample essay sites. There may be sources specific to pathways that you
want to highlight.
2. Explain PROMPT (slide 4) Here I would emphasise Relevance as often students will use
references that are either from unrelated fields and/or when you look at them, do not support
what they are supposed to support.
3. Either use slide 6 – 14 to explain how to put together a search strategy or show the study skills
video on finding quality journal articles (link on slide 15) but stop when it gets to Reference
management software.
4. If you have time, complete the search terms activity (slides 16 – 23)
5. Using slide 25 explain that you can use the library search engine to find journal articles, however
for a more focussed search it is more effective to use one of the education journal databases
accessed via Databases: A-Z / by subject and then clicking on Education, Childhood Studies.
6. Demonstrate Education Source Ultimate. This is a new database and has more international
coverage including African journals. A possible search could be for articles on The use of rubrics
in assessment in higher education or choose something from your pathway. Combine terms
using Boolean operators and show how a search can be refined using peer reviewed, language,
publication date etc.
7. Explain how to find a specific article using the library search engine You could use articles from
Fiona’s session (slide 26) or specific ones for your pathway.
