Activity Design on School-Based Capacity Training on Addressing Least Learned


Competencies in Reading
Objective:

To enhance teachers' strategies for improving students' reading skills, specifically


targeting least learned competencies.
Participants
Teachers of Grades 3-6
Date of Activity
October 10, 2023

Activity Overview
1. Introduction (30 minutes)
 Goal: Establish a common understanding of least learned competencies in
reading.
 Method:
o Brief presentation on the importance of addressing these competencies.
o Discuss recent data or assessments highlighting specific areas of
concern.
2. Group Discussion (30 minutes)
 Goal: Identify specific least learned competencies among participants’ students.
 Method:
o Break into small groups based on grade levels.
o Each group lists the top 3-5 competencies their students struggle with and
shares examples.

3. Interactive Workshop Stations (2 hours)


 Goal: Equip teachers with practical strategies and resources.
 Method: Set up three stations, each focusing on a different competency area.
Station 1: Phonemic Awareness
o Activity: Engage in phonics games and exercises.
o Resources: Provide word cards, phonics games, and online tools.
Station 2: Vocabulary Development
o Activity: Explore strategies for teaching vocabulary through context and
word maps.
o Resources: Use graphic organizers and vocabulary games.
Station 3: Comprehension Skills
o Activity: Practice summarizing and questioning techniques with sample
texts.
o Resources: Share guided reading materials and comprehension
strategies.
4. Reflection and Planning (30 minutes)
 Goal: Encourage teachers to create an action plan to implement learned
strategies.
 Method:
o Individual reflection on how to incorporate new strategies into their
classrooms.
o Develop a short-term action plan with specific steps and timelines.
5. Sharing Session (30 minutes)
 Goal: Foster collaboration and support among teachers.
 Method:
o Invite participants to share their action plans with a partner.
