meet the needs of an organization. uniFLOW offers an organization of any
size, a way to track printing and copying costs, secure sensitive documents,
and enable users to print from any available printer on the network.

The optional plug-ins are available for IT managers and dealers through
http://www.imageware.com, or to the dealer only through Canon U.S.A.’s
e-Support Center Website www.support.cusa.canon.com.
V. Security Features
The imageCLASS MF449dw includes a comprehensive set of security features,
such as Device Authentication, Device Security, and Network Security.
A. Device Authentication
There are four ways to authenticate users at the device:
2. Department ID Authentication
Register a Department ID and password for each department, and
manage the machine by limiting its use to only those who enter the correct
Department ID and password. Department IDs and passwords for up to
1,000 departments can be registered. Use Department ID Management to
keep track of the copy, scan, and print totals for each department. The
following settings can be specified:
Turn Department ID Management ‘On’ or ‘Off’.
Register the Department ID and password.
Set page limits for scans, prints, and copies.
Set whether to use Department ID Management for the Mail Box, Send,
and Network Scan functions. If the Copy function is specified, it is
automatically restricted when Department ID Management is set.
Set up copy, scan, and print restrictions.
B. Device Security
The imageCLASS MF449dw supports the Verify System at Startup mode.
The Verify System at Startup mode protects the device’s firmware and
applications from unauthorized alterations or tampering by malicious third
parties.
C. Network Security
The imageCLASS MF449dw secures network communications by using IP
Address and MAC (Media Access Control) Address filters, encryption and
authentication, and network port and application access control.
The MAC Address Filter permits or rejects access for up to 100 MAC
addresses. It is useful for environments that use DHCP (Dynamic Host
Configuration Protocol) for IP address assignments. If DHCP leases
expire and a new IP address is issued to a certain system, the filter can
still identify the system’s MAC address, and permit or reject access to the
machine. MAC addresses can be added easily, edited, or deleted through
the Remote UI. The MAC Address Filter takes a higher priority than IP
Address Filter, which prevents unknown systems from attacking the
machine.
B. Certification
A service technician must complete the imageCLASS MF449dw course
successfully, and pass the final assessment exam to sell and service this
product.
Certification includes the imageCLASS MF449dw.
D. Prerequisites
It is highly recommended the service technician have:
E. Course Format
The imageCLASS MF449dw online course is a self-paced course. It details
the features, specifications, and servicing procedures.
F. Course Equipment
• Windows workstation with audio and access to the TRAINING section of
the e-Support Center Website
• Flash-enabled Web browser (preferably Microsoft Internet Explorer)
NOTE:
Windows Internet Explorer is necessary to download the documents
supplied with this course. In Internet Explorer 8, the file download option is

IMPORTANT
Make sure that there is approximately 4” (100 mm) or more of space around
the machine for proper installation, operation, and service.
Remote support services consist of the Remote User Interface Support Mode,
imageWARE Remote, and the Remote Services Suite.
2. imageWARE Remote
imageWARE Remote is a service that collects page counter, service parts
counter, and alarm, jam, and error code data from Canon devices with the
eRDS (Embedded Remote Diagnostic System).
The eRDS enables a device to transmit counter and error code data to a
UGW (Universal Gateway) database that the reseller can retrieve via a
Web portal. imageWARE Remote provides the following benefits to
customers:
• The ability to communicate meter counter information to the UGW
database for review by the reseller.
• The ability to communicate device alarm, jam, and error alert
notifications to the UGW database. The notification settings can be
adjusted by the reseller within the UGW.
a. UGW SnapShot
SnapShot is a Web application for use on desktop PCs and mobile
devices. SnapShot provides the ability to query device information
from the imageWARE Remote UGW.
Notes:
• The license access number comes with the software. Keep the license
access number in a secure location, as it cannot be replaced if it is lost.
• The machine’s serial number can be found on the [Check Counter] Check
Dev. Config.] or [Status Monitor] [Device Information] screen on the
machine’s UI, or on the RUI (Remote User Interface).
• Activated software programs are not impacted by normal service activity.
G. Firmware Upgrade
This section describes the two most popular methods used to upgrade the
firmware. For more information on the other methods, see the imageCLASS
MF449dw Service Manual.
Note:
• A computer and the most recent UST (User Support Tool) file are
required to install upgraded firmware.
• Only the Main Controller PCB can be upgraded using the UST.
• The UST and firmware are included in the firmware package download
from the Canon USA public Website.
IMPORTANT
• To upgrade the firmware via Internet, the Serial Number of the machine
must be written on the Main Controller PCB, and the BODY number
must be registered in the Service Mode.
• The machine must also be connected to a network with Internet access.
After the machine’s firmware is updated, the machine restarts and installs
the update. For more information on updating firmware without a PC, see
the imageCLASS MF449dw Service Manual.
For more information on the special tools, solvents, and oils, see the
imageCLASS MF449dw Service Manual.
IMPORTANT
Please DO NOT clean the photosensitive drum or the transfer roller.
I. Cleaning
There are no parts that require cleaning.
K. Consumables
Consumables are all products and materials that are consumed with regular
use and cannot be reused. Such consumables include, but are not limited to,
paper and toner.
Note: All consumables shown in the table below are estimates for reference
purposes only, and are subject to change without notice.
Estimated Life
Description Part Number3 Quantity Remarks
(pages) 6
L. Consumable Parts
Consumable parts are parts that have a limited life, which can be reached
during a customer’s specific machine operation, and should then be replaced
as needed by a service technician.
6 The value is based on LTR paper with the factory default print density setting.
M. Soft Counters
The imageCLASS MF449dw uses soft counters to track its functional copy
and print usages. The table below indicates the default counter configurations
of the imageCLASS MF449dw that are displayed on the Check Counter
screen.

Since the imageCLASS MF449dw does not support 11” x 17” paper, the
customer cannot use a double-click charge scheme.
For detailed warranty information, refer to the Limited Warranty cards located
in the Appendix.
1. Dispatch by CITS
In this support option, the end-user calls the Canon help desk (CITS) for
technical support and troubleshooting. CITS can be reached at
1-800-OK-CANON (652-2666). Check the Canon USA website for hours
of operation. CITS first has the user perform all user-capable service
remedies. If CITS determines that service is required, CITS dispatches the
dealer. To obtain reimbursement for service delivered during the end-user
warranty or Canon eCarePAK coverage term, CITS must dispatch the
dealer. For labor and parts compensation details, refer to the

Note:
• eCarePAK coverage cannot be extended beyond the original term
purchased.
• The eCarePAK Extended Service Plan must be purchased during the
product warranty period, and goes into effect on the day the original
warranty expires.
• The eCarePAK Extended Service Plan does not include coverage for any
consumables, such as paper.
• Any parts reimbursement to the dealer while the eCarePAK Extended
Service Plan is in effect, is through the e-Tag system.
