PERFORMANCE TASK NO.

1 IN GENERAL PHYSICS 1

Direction: Write your final output in a short bond paper. Don’t forget to paste your cut-out shapes in
your final paper.

Finding the Center of Mass for Irregular Shapes

You will need:

1. Three irregular-shaped objects (cut out irregular shapes from any papers)

2. Paper clip (3-5)

3. Pin (max of 3 pins)

4. Thread

5. Ruler

6. Pencil

7. Stable surface Procedure:

Procedure:

1. Set up your workspace on a stable surface where the objects can hang freely.

2. Straighten the paper clip and bend one end into a small hook shape to suspend the objects.

3. Find a spot on each object to attach the paper clip hook. Choose a spot that is balanced or symmetric
if possible.

4. Attach the paper clip securely to each object so they can hang freely without falling off.

5. Cut a length of thread to suspend each object from a fixed point above your workspace. The thread
should be long enough for the objects to hang freely without touching any surfaces.

6. Tie one end of the thread tightly to the head of a pin.

7. Suspend each object from a fixed point (support beam, hook, etc.) above your workspace using the
thread. Make sure the objects hang freely without any interference.

8. Observe if the objects remain stable or swing back and forth. Wait for them to settle into a stable
position.

9. Use the ruler to measure and record the length of the thread from the suspension point to the pin for
each object. Note this measurement as "L1."

10. Carefully rotate each object around the suspension point while keeping them balanced. Rotate them
to different angles or positions.

11. Let each object settle again and observe if they remain stable in the new positions. Wait for any
swinging motion to stop.
12. Measure and record the new lengths of the thread (L2) for each object once they are stable in the new
positions.

13. Repeat the process five times, rotating the objects to different angles and positions each time. Record
the corresponding thread lengths (L2) for each position.

14. Record the data in a table. (Any formatting for the table will do).

Guide Questions:

1. What is the purpose of this activity?

2. How does the placement of the pivot point affect the stability of irregular 2D shapes?

3. What factors influence the position of the center of mass in irregular shapes?

4. If given a mass of 1kg, what will be the center of mass for each shape? Compute.

Criteria for Grading:

1. Completeness of the Final Output (20 pts): This criterion assesses how well the procedures are executed
and whether the activity is conducted thoroughly and accurately.

2. Organization of Thoughts (15 pts): This criterion evaluates the clarity and coherence of the answers
provided for the guide questions. It focuses on how well the ideas are structured and presented.

3. Correctness of the Answer and Solution (10 pts): This criterion pertains to the accuracy of the answers
and computations provided, particularly in solving the problem presented. It assesses the correctness of
the center of mass calculations and the understanding of the concepts involved.

4. Neatness (5 pts): This criterion evaluates the overall presentation and formatting of the final paper or
output submitted. It assesses the cleanliness, organization, and legibility of the output.

Total: 50 pts. (Highest Possible Score)
