A RELATION is any set of ordered pairs.

The
set of all first elements of the ordered pairs is
called the domain of the relation, and the set of
all second elements is called the range.
A FUNCTION is a special relation or rule of
correspondence between two elements
(domain and range) such that each element in
the domain corresponds to exactly one
element in the range.
A graph of a relation is a function if any vertical
line drawn passing through the graph
intersects it at exactly one point.
Ordered Pairs – a pair of objects taken in a
specific order (1,2) – domain
Domain – set of all X or input values
Range – set of all y values or ouput
Sets – collection of well defined and distict
objects – elements
• Mapping – shows how the elements are
paired

• Vertical Line Test
• Tables of values
A piecewise function is a function in which
more than one formula is used to define the
output. Each formula has its own domain, and
the domain of the function is the union of all EXAMPLE:
these smaller domains. We notate this idea like
1. A tricycle ride costs ₱10.00 for the first 2
this:
kilometers, and each additional kilometer adds
f(x) = { ₱8.00 to the fare. Use a piecewise function to
formula 1 if x is in domain 1 represent the tricycle fare in terms of the
formula 2 if x is in domain 2 distance d in kilometers.
formula 3 if x is in domain 3

2. A van rental charges ₱5,500.00 flat rate for a

whole-day tour in CALABARZON of 5
passengers and each additional passenger
added ₱500.00 to the tour fare. Express a
piecewise function to show to represent the
van rental in terms number of passenger n.
Answer:
EVALUATING FUNCTION
Evaluating function is the process of
determining the value of the function at the
number assigned to a given variable.
Steps:
1. Replace each letter in the expression with
the assigned value.
2. Perform the operations in the expression
using the correct order of operations.
OPERATIONS ON FUNCTION:

e.

In composition of functions, we will have a lot

of substitutions. if a function is substituted to
all variables in another function, you are
performing a composition of functions to
create another function.
Definition of Rational Function not make the denominator of the function
A rational function, r(x) is a function of equal to zero while Range is the set of
the form second coordinates.
When the value of the denominator is
where p(x) and q(x) are polynomial ZERO, then the graph of ratinal function is
functions and q(x) ≠ 0 UNDEFINED.
The domain of r(x) is a set of real DOMAIN - independent
numbers such that q(x) is not zero.
RANGE Y OR f(x) - dependent
In notation, D= (-∞, −𝟑) ∪ (−𝟑, ∞)

To find the domain equate the

denominator to ZERO
To find the y – intercept, change the x
value of the function to 0.
To find x – intercept equate the
numerator function to 0.
To find the zeroes of a rational function,
equate the function to 0 or solve for the x
– intercept of the function by equating the
numerator to 0.

Domain is the set of first coordinates of a

relation and it is the value of x that will

ONE TO ONE FUNCTIONS

When working on the coordinate plane, a
function is a one-to-one function when it
will pass the vertical line test (to make it a
function) and also a horizontal line test
(to make it one-to-one).

The notation f -1 is used to

represent the inverse of a function f
An exponential function is a function
involving exponential expression showing
a relationship between the independent
variable x and dependent variable y or
f(x). Examples of which are 𝑓(𝑥) = 2 𝑥+3
and 𝑦 = 102𝑥
On the other hand, an exponential
equation is an equation involving

Inverse Functions for all x values satisfying the equation. For
instance, 121 = 11𝑥 and 3 𝑥 = 9 𝑥−2 .
Lastly, an exponential inequality is an
inequality involving exponential
expression that can be solved for all x
values satisfying the inequality. For
example, 641/3 > 2 𝑥 and (0.9) 𝑥 > 0.81.
