Why 5S?

• To eliminate the wastes that result from “uncontrolled” processes.


• To gain control on equipment, material & inventory placement and
position.
• Apply Control Techniques to Eliminate Erosion of Improvements.
• Standardize Improvements for Maintenance of Critical Process
Parameters.

WHAT IS 5S?
A systematic and rational approach to workplace

organization and methodical housekeeping with a

sense of purpose.
SERI – Sorting

SEITON – Orderliness / Systematic Arrangement

SEISO – Cleanliness / Spic and Span

SEIKETSU – Standardization / Serene atmosphere

SHITSUKE – Self Discipline

SERI (SORTING)

• Identify and sort to segregate usable and not usable items.

• Sort out required and not required items.

• Required but not usable items should be repaired if repairable.

• Discard items not required, scrap all items having no potential use.

• Remove all garbage and unnecessary tools from shop floor.

• Remove unnecessary papers from file.

• Discard old files, stationery not in use.

• Give a horizontal and vertical look (walls and floor) to remove all
unnecessary items.

• Clean walkways.

SEITON (ORDERLINESS)

• Ensure rational layout of machines, equipments, and cabinets.

• Place frequently used items at the point of use.

• Place things occasionally used in work area.

• Item seldom used but still needed should be placed in stores.

• A place for everything and everything in its place.

• Use labels, colour code for easy identification.

• Use index for files, records, and drawings.

• Plan storage with easy retrievability.

• Mixed up items in cabinet, racks self explanatory through identification


aids.

• Have visual controls for checking missing items.

SEISO ( CLEANLINESS)

• Keep machines, workplace clean throughout.

• Sweeping floors and surroundings.

• Dusting to make dirt free, cobweb free.

• Wiping to make oil, grease, and moisture free.

• Polishing and painting.

• Maintaining sparkling cleanliness.

• Inspecting for any problems.

• Identifying root causes and establishing corrective action.

• Develop standards of cleaning.

• Clean work place after use.

• Clean machines and tools after use.

SEIKETSU ( STANDARDIZATION)

• Create visual control systems.

• Devise ways to expose hidden problems.

• Create standards.

• Wear protective clothing, neat and clean uniform.

• Provide adequate lighting, ventilation, and exhaust.

• Check electrical wiring, cables, and switches.

SHITSUKE (SELF DISCIPLINE)
• Maintain punctuality.

• Conduct audits.

• Demonstrate sincerity in following rules.

• Display correct work procedures.

• Correct deviations on the spot.
