WEEK THREE LESSON NOTE

TRANS-SAHARA TRADE ROUTES

As caravans were organized, they had to follow specific trade route that gave
them a sense of direction on their way through the trade. The major route that
was used include:

1. The Western Route

The Western route emerged from Fez in Morocco via Siljilmasa, Taghaza,
Taode, and Audaghost up to Timbuktu. This route was famous because of
salt mines at Taghaza and gold mines at Wangara.

2. The Central route

The central route emerged at Tunis in Tunisia via Tuat, Taotek,
Tadmekket, Timbuktu, Gao, and Kano up to Katsina.
3. The Eastern route
The Eastern to the other hand emerged from Tripoli in Libya, Alexandra
and Cairo in Egypt to Bilma via Murzuk, Ghat and Agades. This route was
significant because of salt mines in Bilma

In Nigeria, there were three important Trans-Sahara Trade route; they

are:
 Tripoli to Borno:
Borno Empire by the 16th century became the major source of slaves
traded by Trans-Sahara traders. While Tripoli in Libya served the
Northern terminus of the trade route to Borno; Borno was the Southern
terminus of the trade route coming from Tripoli in Libya. Most of the
traders through this route go to Europe from Libya because of the
closeness of Libya to Italy.

 Sudan to Kanem Borno: Arabs from the Middle East were important
part of the Trans-Sahara trade, they had to journey through East Africa
or Central Africa (i.e Sudan) before they reach West Africa where the
Sahara trade was taking place. Hence Sudan was another important
Trade route to Borno.

 Fezzan to Kano: Kano was the major supplier of cloth (textile) and Kano
city was positioned to the western part of Nigeria. There was an
important trade route from Fezzan (West African Region of Libya) to
Katsina and Kano for trade purpose
