CIV3104: HYDROLOGY I
ASSIGNMENT-I

Qn.1. (a) What are the factors which influence the amount of Radiant energy received
at any point on the earth’s surface?
(b) How does the atmosphere affect solar radiation?
(c) What do you understand by net radiation?
Qn.2. a) What is the Green house effect?
b) How can its effects be counteracted?
Qn.3. a) Discuss the Causes of Climate change?
b) Explain the significance of the carbon cycle.
Qn4. a) With Examples, discuss the importance of hydrologists to society
b) Write an essay (of less than 3,000 words) about the socio-economic importance
of water
Qn5 (a) Discuss the formation of precipitation
(b) Describe the different methods of recording rainfall
(c) Discuss the measures that may be taken to minimize errors in measurements
made by precipitation guages.
Qn6 a) Explain a method that may be used to infill missing precipitation values.
b) The annual rainfall at station A and the average annual rainfall at 20 surrounding
stations are given in Table 1. Examine the consistency of data at station A.
Indicate at what year a change in regime has occurred and how you are going to
make the necessary adjustments.
Qn7 (a) Figure 1 shows the boundaries of a fictitious watershed and the locations of nine
(9) rain gauges. The numbers indicated on the sketch are the gage catches for a
particular storm in mm. Find the average precipitation for the entire watershed
using:
i) The Arithmetic Average method
ii) The ‘eye ball’ Isohyetal method
iii) The Thiessen polygon method
(b) Write a short paragraph comparing the results of the three methods and
discussing which method seems most appropriate for this situation
Qn8 Using the isohyets developed in Qn 7(ii) above, develop a Depth Area Duration
Curve of the catchment based on the recorded storm.
