Physics Lab #12

Title: Power

Aim: To determine the power of individuals of varying masses.

Materials/ Apparatus:

 1 partner
 1 metre rule
 1 scale
 Staircase
 Stopwatch/ timer

Diagram:

< Draw Apparatus used in experiment>

Please note: label lines should be on the right.

(Be sure to draw a neat and clear diagram, no tracing, shading etc.

CAPTION SHOULD BE APPROPRIATE.

Method: (write in correct tense)

1. Record the masses of the individuals.

2. Measure and record the vertical height of the staircase.
3. On the count of three, allow one individual to run up the staircase while the other
person starts the stopwatch simultaneously to record the time taken to run up the
stairs.
4. Allow the pair to switch places with each other.
5. Allow the individuals to rest for 5 minutes.
6. Repeat steps 3 and 4.
7. The individuals should rest for 5 minutes and repeat steps 3 and 4 again.
8. Calculate the power of each individual using the formula, p = mgh
t
Results:

Vertical height of staircase = 2.565 m

Mass of individual 1:
Mass of individual 2:
Acceleration due to gravity on Earth: 9.8 N Kg-1

Calculations:

Calculating the power of individual One:

p = mgh
t

<Substitute figures until power is found. Include units at all times showing how the
unit for power is derived etc...>

Calculating the power of individual Two:

p = mgh
t

<Substitute figures until the power is found. Include units at all times showing how
the unit for power is derived etc...>
Discussion:

-what is Power? State the SI unit for power.

-How can the power of an individual be determined? What formula was used in the
experiment to calculate power? Why was this the best method of finding the power of
the individuals?

-Explain how and why the powers of the different individuals vary.

(Any other relevant points may be added)

- Each point may be used as a paragraph. 

Possible sources of errors: <what could have lead to any inaccuracy of the results in
the experiment?> (At least 2 possible sources of errors
are required)

Conclusion:

With reference to the aim, it can be concluded that …………………………………………..

<Conclusion MUST be relevant to the aim>
