Lesson Plan

Grade Level: 8 VARNA


Subject: Paragraph Writing
Duration: 80 minutes

Objective:

By the end of the lesson, students will be able to:

• Understand the structure of a paragraph.

• Write a simple paragraph with a clear topic sentence, supporting details, and a concluding
sentence.

Materials:

• Whiteboard

• Markers

• Handouts on paragraph structure

Lesson Flow:

1. Introduction (10 minutes):

• Ask the class: "What is a paragraph?"

o Allow students to share their ideas.

• Define a paragraph: A paragraph is a group of sentences that talks about one main idea. It
starts with a topic sentence, includes supporting details, and ends with a concluding
sentence.

2. Parts of a Paragraph (10 minutes):

• Topic Sentence: The first sentence that introduces the main idea of the paragraph.

• Supporting Details: Sentences that explain or give more information about the main idea.

• Concluding Sentence: The last sentence that wraps up the paragraph by summarizing the
main point or giving a final thought.

3. Example (10 minutes):

Write a simple paragraph on the board:

Sample Paragraph:
"My favorite hobby is reading. I enjoy reading because it helps me relax and learn new things. I
usually read books about adventure and fantasy, but sometimes I like non-fiction too. Reading also
improves my vocabulary and writing skills. Overall, reading is a hobby that brings me joy and
knowledge."

• Identify the parts:

o Topic Sentence: "My favorite hobby is reading."

o Supporting Details: Sentences explaining why reading is enjoyable and beneficial.

o Concluding Sentence: "Overall, reading is a hobby that brings me joy and


knowledge."

4. Guided Practice (10 minutes):

• Have students choose a simple topic (e.g., their favorite food or animal).

• Ask them to write a topic sentence and two supporting details.

5. Independent Practice (15 minutes):

• Students will write their own paragraph on a topic of their choice, following the structure
discussed (Topic Sentence, Supporting Details, Concluding Sentence).

Wrap-Up (5 minutes):

• Review: Recap the three main parts of a paragraph: topic sentence, supporting details, and
concluding sentence.

• Exit Ticket: Ask students to write one thing they learned about paragraphs today.

Activity: Identifying the Parts of a Paragraph

Instructions:
Read the paragraph below and identify the following:

1. Topic Sentence

2. Supporting Details

3. Concluding Sentence

Sample Paragraph:
"Playing sports is a great way to stay healthy and have fun. It helps keep your body in shape by
improving your strength and endurance. Sports also teach valuable skills like teamwork and
discipline. Whether it's basketball, soccer, or swimming, playing sports can boost your mood
and energy. Overall, sports are beneficial for both your physical and mental health."

Example 1:

"My family loves spending weekends at the beach. We usually wake up early to pack our
things and head out. When we get there, we spend time swimming, building sandcastles, and
relaxing under the sun. My parents enjoy watching the sunset while my siblings and I play in
the water. Going to the beach is our favorite way to unwind and bond as a family."
