Lesson 6.

4: Attributes of PArAboLAs Notes

Parabola:
______________________________________________________________________________________

_______________________________________________________________________________________

A. vertex: 𝟓, 𝟐 focus: 𝟑, 𝟐 B. focus: 𝟐, 𝟐 directrix: 𝒚 = −𝟐

𝑝 =______ 𝑝 =______
Direction: _______ Direction: _______
Equation: Vertex: ________
________________ Equation:
Directrix: ________ ________________
Axis of Sym: ______ Axis of Sym: ______
Latus Rectum: _____ Latus Rectum: _____
Identify the vertex, focus and directrix of each parabola.
C. 𝑥 − 2 = −4 𝑦 − 3 D. 𝑦 − 1 = 12 𝑥 + 2

Vertex: ______________ Vertex: ______________

Focus: _______________ Focus: _______________
Directrix: _____________ Directrix: _____________
Given the characteristics write the standard form equation of each parabola.
E. vertex: 3, −4 F. vertex: −2, 1 G. focus: 0, 0
focus: 1, −4 directrix: 𝑥 = −5 directrix: 𝑦 = 16

For problems H – J convert the equation into vertex form.

Recall: Vertex Form is 𝑦 = 𝑎(𝑥 − ℎ) +𝑘 for vertical parabolas (quadratics). Therefore, Vertex Form for
horizontal parabolas is 𝑥 = 𝑎(𝑦 − 𝑘) +ℎ.
H. 0 = 3𝑥 − 24𝑥 − 𝑦 + 43 I. 𝑥 = 2𝑦 + 6𝑦 + 25 J. 𝑥 + 12𝑦 = 𝑦 + 34

K. Solar energy may be harnessed by using parabolic mirrors. The mirrors reflect the rays from the Sun to
the focus of the parabola. Consider a parabolic mercury mirror that has a focus 6 feet above the vertex and
the latus rectum is 24 feet long.

Assume the focus is at the origin. Write an equation for the parabola formed by the parabolic mirror.
