Coordinating conjunctions Sir.
That’s right! Our lesson for today is all about
coordinating conjunctions. But before we

Now let’s proceed to our topic which is the

coordinating conjunctions.

Coordinating conjunctions serve as a

If so, what is coordinating conjunctions? Yes

Vaneza?
Very good Vaneza! Coordinating conjunctions
are words that connect words, phrases, and
clauses. They help to show the relationship
between the elements they join.

Because they needed groceries

There are seven coordinating conjunctions
known as FANBOYS. Each of them has its
own function.

First is For, it use to show reason or purpose.

To get a good grade.

Example: They went to the store, for they
needed groceries.

Why they went to the store ? Yes Cindy?

I went to the canteen for some snacks.

That’s right! The reason why they went to the

store is that they needed groceries. Another
example: He studied hard for he wanted to get
a good grade.
For some snacks.

Why did he study hard? Yes Nikko?

It use to show reason or purpose.

Very good! He studied hard for he wanted to

get a good grade.

coordinating conjunction “for”? Yes Reggie?

Thank you Reggie! Based on the sentence,

what is the purpose of the speaker for going to
the canteen? Yes Jadna?

Very good! Again, what is the function of the

coordinating conjunction “for” ? Yes Chona?

Very good! Now, let’s proceed to another I want to eat apples and oranges.
coordinating conjunction which is “and”.
Everybody read.

We use “and” to add ideas to sentences

showing that they occur together or
simultaneously. For example : The sun was
shining brightly. If we want to add another
idea, we will use the conjunction “and”. The
sun was shining brightly, and the birds were
singing merrily. The sentence shows that both
actions happened simultaneously.

Another example: I love listening songs and

writing poems.
I don’t like coffee nor tea.
Now, who can construct a sentence using a
coordinating conjunction “and”? Yes Iris?

Very good! Remember, if we want add ideas to

the sentence, we will the coordinating
conjunction “and”.

Next is “nor”. I means negative alternative. It

surprising shift.
For example: I don’t drink alcohol nor smoke
cigarettes. It means, I don’t drink alcohol, I
don’t also smoke cigarettes.

Another example: He didn’t eat breakfast nor

lunch. In other words, he didn’t eat breakfast,
he didn’t also eat lunch.
I wanted to go to the beach, but it was raining.

Now, who can construct a sentence using the

coordinating conjunction “nor”? Yes Chona?

Very good! If we connect non-contrasting I studied thoroughly for the board exam, but I

should be use ?

Very good! Next is the coordinating

conjunction “but”. Everybody read.

The coordinating conjunction “but” is use to

join contrasting ideas, often showing an
unexpected or surprising shift. I like to eat meat, but I have no money to buy.

For example, Everybody read.

between the speaker’s desire and the weather.

Another example, everybody read.

You can have the cake, or you can have the ice
cream.
This example shows a surprising shift. I
studied thoroughly for the board exam, so is
expected for me to pass, but I failed. The
conjunction “but” is used to show a surprising
shift in a sentence.
Would you like coffee or tea?
Now, who can construct a sentence using the
coordinating conjunction “but”. Yes Cherelyn?

Very good! Next is the coordinating

conjunction “or”. Everybody read.
Do you like me or not?

The coordinating conjunction “or” shows

alternative or choice. For example, everybody
read. Or

Another example, everybody read.

The sentence shows a choice between two

options. Would you like coffee or tea?

Now, who can construct a sentence using a

coordinating conjunction “or”? Yes Christine? He was tired, yet he continued working.

Very good Christine! If we want to join

alternative ideas or choices, what coordinating
conjunction should be use?

Very good! Another coordinating conjunction Take a rest.

is “yet”. Everybody read.

A coordinating conjunction “yet” shows a

Yet.
contrast, or unexpected connection between
two ideas, often suggesting a surprising or
challenging situation.
John is already tired, yet determined to win.

For example, everybody read.

The conjunction ”yet” is used to show a

contrast between his tiredness and his action.
She was scared, yet she bravely faced her fears.
He was tired, yet he continued working. It also
shows a surprising and challenging situation,
because when you are tired, what you are
going to do?

It indicates results, effect, or consequences .

That’s right ! When you are tired, you should

take a rest, but here in the sentence he
continued working. He was tired, yet he
continued working. So, the conjunction we use
is? Ana has a fever, so she didn’t go to school.

Another example, everybody read.

The rain was heavy, so we decided to stay

inside.
The sentence shows an unexpected contrast
between his tiredness and determination.

Now, who can construct a sentence using a

coordinating conjunction “yet”? Yes Vaneza?

I was tired so I went to bed early.

Very good!
For, and, nor, but, or, yet, so.
The last coordinating conjunction is “so”.
Everybody read.

Non Sir!

The coordinating conjunction “so” indicates

results, effect, or consequences. For example,
everybody read.

The coordinating conjunction “so” used to

show the consequence of Ana having a fever 1. Minimize your voice when talking
which is she didn’t go to school. 2. No roaming around. Stick to your
groupmates
3. Participate in your group
Another example, everybody read.

The coordinating conjunction “so” is use to

show a result of having a heavy rain which is
we decided to stay inside.

Now, who can construct sentence using the

coordinating conjunction “so”. Yes Ela?
(The students will raised their hands )

conjunctions. It can easily remember to using
the acronym FANBOYS. Again, what does
FANBOYS stands for?

clarifications?

2. Generalization
None Sir!

Since we are done with all our activities, I

want to know what you have learned from our
lesson this morning. Yes Vaneza?

Very good! What else? Yes Reggie?

Very good! What will happen to the sentence

if there are no coordinating conjunctions? For
example this sentence. I don’t drink alcohol
nor smoke cigarettes . If we remove “nor”,
what will happen to the sentence? Yes Iris?

Very good! The sentence becomes

grammatically incorrect and disjointed
because the “nor” acts as a bridge, connecting
the two negative statements “I don’t drink
alcohol” and “I don’t smoke cigarettes”. And
also the sentence lost its intended meaning of
expressing two negative actions. It would
sound like you're saying you don't drink
alcohol, but you might smoke cigarettes.
That’s will happen if there’s no coordinating
conjunctions. The sentence becomes
disjointed, fragmented, limited, confusing and
lost its intended meaning. If we put a
coordinating conjunction to the sentence , it
become coherent and has clear meaning.

Now, based on that example, why do you

think coordinating conjunctions are important?
Yes Vaneza?

Exactly! In other words coordinating

conjunctions are essential tools for building
strong and coherent sentences. They enhance
sentence structures, clarify relationships
between ideas, and ensure that the intended
meaning is conveyed accurately. Without
them, the sentence will become confusing,
disjointed, limited, and meaningless.

Any questions and clarifications?

If so, prepare ¼ sheet of paper for the short

quiz.
