Math 30 (Intermediate Analysis and Applications)

1st Semester AY 2024-2025
COURSE GUIDE

COURSE DESCRIPTION
This course aims to provide more mathematical tools and skills useful in business,
economics, and social sciences. In particular, the course covers the calculus of functions of more
than one variable, sequences and series, and introduction to matrices.

PREREQUISITE: Math 21/Math 100 or equivalent

COURSE CREDIT: 3 units

COURSE LEARNING OUTCOMES

At the end of this course, you should be able to:
1. sketch the domain of a two-variable function on the Cartesian plane;
2. discuss the continuity of a two-variable function at a point;
3. determine the nth partial derivative of a multivariable function;
4. find the relative extrema of a multivariable function;
5. apply Lagrange multipliers to find the extrema of a multivariable function subject to constraints;
6. use integration by parts and integration by partial fractions to evaluate some integrals;
7. set up and evaluate double integrals;
8. utilize the method of integrating factors to solve ordinary linear differential equations of the
first order;
9. apply tests to determine whether a sequence or a series converges or diverges;
10. obtain the power series representation of some common functions along with the radius of
convergence;
11. perform operations on matrices;
12. find the reduced row echelon form of a matrix;
13. compute the determinant of a matrix using cofactor expansion;
14. determine the inverse of a matrix;
15. compute the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of a matrix; and
16. use the eigenvalues and eigenvectors to diagonalize a diagonalizable matrix

MODE OF DELIVERY
All meetings will be held face-to-face. Attendance to face-to-face classes is required. As per
university rule, a student must not absent him/herself more than 20% of the total number of
discussion class meetings. If most of his/her absences are excused, then the student must drop the
course. Otherwise, he/she shall be given a grade of 5.0. Failure to submit an excuse letter/slip will
make the absence unexcused.

There will be an UVLe class for Math 30. An enrollment key for this class will be given in the case
that students are not automatically enrolled in the class. All resources for this course can be
accessed via UVLe.

COURSE REQUIREMENTS
Long Exams 60%
Exercises 10%
Final Exam 30%

Schedule of Final Exam: To be announced

There will be three face-to-face long exams and one final exam for this class. The three long exams
are departmental, and the schedules are indicated in the paced syllabus in the succeeding pages.
The schedule of the final exam will follow the final examination schedule set by the university, and
will be announced when the corresponding document is released.
A student who will not be able to take a long exam due to a valid reason (e.g. medical) must explain
in writing the reason for missing the exam (and provide proof) not later than one week after the
exam. If the reason is deemed valid by the instructor, the marks on the final exam will be used for
that particular exam. If the student misses another examination, he/she will automatically be given
a zero mark in that exam. A student who fails to communicate within a week after the missed exam
or whose reason is not valid shall automatically be given a score of 0.
In the event that the student misses the final exam with valid excuse, a grade of INC shall be given
provided that the class standing is passing (at least 60%). Otherwise, the student shall be given a
grade of 0 for the final exam.

GRADING SYSTEM

ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
By enrolling in this course, students are expected to adhere to the highest standards of honor
and academic integrity and be bound by the following pledge.
As a student of the University of the Philippines, I pledge to act ethically and uphold the value of
honor and excellence. I understand that suspected misconduct on given homework assignments and
exams will be reported to the appropriate office and if established, will result in disciplinary action in
accordance with University rules, policies and procedure.
