Q1. What is counselling? Explain the stages of counselling?

Ans 1. Counselling is a service provided by professionals which is aimed at helping clients understand
and resolve personal issues, achieve personal growth, and improve overall well-being. It involves a
structured conversation between the counselor and the client, where the counselor uses specific
techniques to facilitate the client’s self-understanding, emotional expression, and problem-solving.
Counseling can address a wide range of issues, including emotional difficulties, mental health conditions,
life transitions, relationship problems, and personal development goals.

There are 5 stages of counselling

1. Rapport building- Establish trust and a strong therapeutic alliance between the counselor and
the client.
2. Assessing the issues- Gather detailed information about the client’s issues, history, and context
to understand their current situation.
3. Setting a goal- Discussing and clarifying the client’s needs and desires and translating these into
objectives.
4. Intervention- Implement strategies and techniques to address the client’s issues and work
towards achieving their goals.
5. Reflection- Monitor the client’s progress, evaluate the effectiveness of interventions, and make
necessary adjustments.

Q2. What are the important skills of a counsellor? Tell us about your special counselling skills?

Ans 2. Empathy, genuineness, active listener, transparency, patience, confidentiality, trustworthiness,


non-judgmental, unconditional positive regard, self-respect, communication skills, encouraging the
client, ability to summarize and reflect the client’s thoughts and feelings. Some skills that I have are
empathy, good listener, patient, non-judgmental and genuine.

Q3. Explain important skills of counselling and how will you use that in greeting the client?

Ans 3. The following are the skills that a counsellor should possess to effectively conduct counselling
sessions with their client: -

1. Active Listening:
Active listening involves fully concentrating, understanding, responding, and remembering what
the client says. It ensures the client feels heard and valued, facilitating a deeper understanding
of their issues.
2. Empathy:
Empathy is the ability to understand and share the feelings of the client. It helps in building trust
and rapport, as clients feel genuinely understood and supported in their emotional experiences.

3. Rapport Building:
Rapport building creates a positive and trusting relationship with the client. It involves warmth,
respect, and genuine interest, making the client feel safe and comfortable to open up.
4. Communication Skills:
Effective communication skills include both verbal and non-verbal communication. Clear,
concise, and compassionate communication helps in expressing understanding, providing
feedback, and facilitating the counseling process.

5. Problem Solving and Goal Setting:


Problem solving and goal setting involve identifying issues and collaboratively developing
actionable plans to address them. It empowers clients to take steps towards resolving their
problems and achieving their objectives.

6. Cultural Competence:
Cultural competence is the ability to understand, respect, and work effectively with clients from
diverse cultural backgrounds. It ensures that counseling is relevant and respectful of the client's
cultural context and values.

7. Boundaries and Ethics:


Maintaining professional boundaries and adhering to ethical guidelines are crucial for ensuring
the integrity of the counseling relationship. It protects both the client and counselor and fosters
a safe therapeutic environment.

8. Self-Awareness and Self-Care:


Self-awareness allows counselors to understand their own biases, reactions, and limits, ensuring
they provide the best care. Self-care practices are essential for preventing burnout and
maintaining professional effectiveness and personal well-being.
