QMS210: Business Statistics

SPSS PROJECT No. 1


WINTER 2024
DUE: by 11:59pm, Feb. 25, 2024.
MARKS: Total marks = 20 (or 5% of the final grade)
LATE SUBMISSION:
There are no due date extension for SPSS projects and MyLab assignments. Manage your due date
well. For the SPSS project, there will be a penalty of 25% imposed for each calendar day late (as
per the submission timestamp in D2L). You will receive a zero mark for an SPSS project after 4
calendar days late.

Note: This document is posted on the course shell on January 29, 2024, so you have 4
weeks.
Notes:
1. No handwritten reports will be considered for marking purposes.
2. Indicate your CSV input data file name and your name and student number on
your report cover page.
3. All relevant SPSS outputs (and ONLY relevant outputs) should be copied and
pasted from the SPSS output into your report
4. Upload your SPSS output file and CSV input data file together with your report
online via D2L under Assessment – Assignments – SPSS Project 1 .
5. The report must be a single file and in PDF format only. Failure to follow this may
result in a zero mark.
6. Read this entire document.

You will analyze a sample of of sixty(60) resale prices of GM CARS. Your data set was
randomly resampled from a big data set that consist of more records. So, please be aware that
each student will have their own data set. You will only focus on the relevant variables and
answer each question.
The data includes:
NUM- The unique index number of each auto
Mileage – usage of the car (mileage in miles)

Price Price of each car sold
Make – The make of the car – Buick, Cadillac, Chevrolet, Pontiac, SAAB, Saturn
Model – The model of the car - Century, Lacrosse, Lesabre, etc
Trim - different versions of the same model with different features: Sedan 4D, CX Sedan 4D,
Custom Sedan 4D, Limited Sedan 4D, Sedan 4D, DHS Sedan 4D, DTS Sedan 4D, etc.
Type – different car types: Sedan, Coupe, Convertible, Hatchback, Wagon
Doors – number of doors, 2, 4.
Engine Engines with 4 cylinders, 6 cylinders or 8 cylinders power.
Liter – Car engine size measures in liters.
Sound – Car audio speaker where 1- upgraded speaker, 0-standard speaker
Cruise – Cruise control is a system with an automatic control of the car speed where 1 – there is
cruise control and 0 – no cruise control
Leather – Car seat cover where 1 – there is leather seats and 0 – no leather seats

How the Project is graded


Your submission will be graded based upon the following factors: substance, presentation,
accuracy, grammar and clarity. A demonstration of effort is the driving force of this assignment.
Assignments will be compared to discern levels of effort and excellence.

As a minimum, your report must include the following:


1. Title page: [1] title [2] submission date [3] file name of the data set used [4] Your name
and student number, [5] course code (i.e.: QMS210) [and section numbers] Submitted to
“Instructor’s name”
2. Your project must be submitted online via D2L under Assessment – Assignments – SPSS
Project 1. No email submission are allowed.
3. The answer to each question will begin on a new page.
4. Cut and paste all relevant SPSS outputs in the write-up section at the bottom of your
answer to each question. Do not send the reader to appendices to find them.
5. Not using the exact dataset assigned to you will result in getting a zero mark for the
project. If you use data from a different person, both you and the other person will
receive a zero mark and will lead to a charge of academic misconduct. The data for
each individual is for your own use only.

THERE ARE 2 QUESTIONS in this project.

IMPORTANT:
Each person HAS THEIR OWN unique Data Set. Anyone caught using another student’s
data set, or plagiarising another student’s work, will be charged with academic misconduct
and both parties will receive a grade of zero for their project.

Question 1

Make a table of the mean, median, standard deviation, and variance of the mileages of the
automobiles by ``Type’’ of cars. Discuss your results.

Question 2

Construct a bar chart that shows the percentage of cars by the variable “Type”. Your bar
chart should show the category names with the percentage breakdown, that is, data labels in
percentage. Proper title and axis of charts are required.
