MY COURSE MODULE | Week 01

ADEYEMI COLLEGE OF EDUCATION, ONDO

Department of Fine & Applied Arts
COUSRE CODE: FAA 101
COURSE TITLE: INTRODUCTION TO FINE AND APPLIED ARTS

Course Topic: What is Fine and Applied Arts?

INTRODUCTION

Art is as one of the oldest media has been a tool for human survival. Man has always wanted to
use things for his convenience; since then, Art has always been a medium of utilitarian survival
in his society. With this, Art has therefore been a means of self-expression of inner feelings or
ideas about things, people and his immediate environment which prompts man to make skillful
use of available materials to produce for his own use and pleasure.

WHAT IS ART?

Art in the world of its own is defined by different people of culture, traditions and scholars
depending on the approach given to it either for the utilitarian purpose or aesthetic value.

1. Art is what Artists do. (this is by how they do it [Medium], for who they do it for [Patron]
and for what purpose they do it [functions])
2. Art is the self-expression of inner feelings or ideas about things, people and
environment in general.
3. Art is the act of making skillful use of materials to produce things for human use and
pleasure
4. Art is the visual and non-visual representation of human thoughts.
5. Art is the skillful doing of something not taught by human nature
6. Art is the universal language of expression
7. Art is the subject that studies human being in his beautiful environment together with
his culture; how he communicates with his culture, degree of his appreciation of the
works of art and presentation of his culture.

Banjoko (2000) defined Art to be unusual language of self-expression of man in his cultural and
natural environment through the use of some materials, skills and techniques to produce
various works of self-expression, utility and beauty or aesthetics.

Anne D’ Alleva (2006) described that Art as any material or visual thing that is made by a person
or persons that is invested with either social, political, spiritual and/or aesthetic value by the
creator, user viewer or patron.

WHAT IS APPLIED ART?

The Applied arts are all the arts that apply design and decoration to everyday and essentially
practical objects in order to make them aesthetically pleasing.

Applied Art is the application (and resulting product) of artistic design to utilitarian objects in
everyday use.

Applied Art is the design or decoration of functional objects so as to make them aesthetically
pleasing.

Moreover, Applied Art is used in distinction to fine art, although there is often no clear dividing

line between fine Art and Applied Arts. According to the Encyclopedia of Art Education (2021),
Fine Art does not have much function other than providing aesthetic or intellectual stimulation,
while the Applied Arts are the aspect of the Art that provides functional objects which are
creatively designed with both aesthetic and function in mind.

However, works of applied art comprise two different types: standard machine-made products
which have had a particular design applied to them, to make them more attractive and easier-
to-use; and individual, aesthetically pleasing but mostly functional, craft products made by
artisans or skilled workers.

Artistic disciplines that are classified as applied arts, includes;

• Industrial design
• Textiles (Batik, Tie and Dye, Fabrics making, Fashion design, Tapestry, Embroidery)
• Interior design (furniture, carpets, Wall decoration)
• Graphic art and design (Mosaic art, including Computer graphics)
• Sculpture (Metal Works, Metal Fabrication, Casting, Goldsmithing,
• Ceramics (Pottery, Glassware)
• Painting

Visual art is created primarily for aesthetic purpose and valued for its beauty or expressiveness
specifically; painting, sculpture, drawing, watercolour, graphics, or architecture.

Therefore, a working definition of Fine and Applied Art will be expressed as the skillful visual
representation of human thoughts with any medium through the application
of design and decoration that is aesthetically pleasing and functional use.
