Before housekeeping can be commenced, it is necessary to select and check the

equipment and materials used for clean-up. These requirements will be outlined in
the Standard Operating Procedures which must be used to ensure the correct
equipment, materials and techniques are used for housekeeping tasks.
The types and uses of cleaning supplies and equipments must be identified.
Effective housekeeping can eliminate some workplace hazards and help get a job
done safely and properly. Poor housekeeping can frequently contribute to accidents
by hiding hazards that cause injuries. If the sight of paper, debris, clutter and spills
is accepted as normal, then other more serious health and safety hazards may be
taken for granted.
Housekeeping is not just cleanliness. It includes keeping work areas neat and
orderly; maintaining halls and floors free of slip and trip hazards; and removing of
waste materials (e.g., paper, cardboard) and other fire hazards from work areas. It
also requires paying attention to important details such as the layout of the whole
workplace, aisle marking, the adequacy of storage facilities, and maintenance. Good
housekeeping is also a basic part of accident and fire prevention.

Housekeeping refers to the management of duties and chores involved in the

running of a household, such as cleaning, cooking, home maintenance, shopping,
laundry and bill pay. These tasks may be performed by any of the household
members, or by other persons hired to perform these tasks. The term is also used to
refer to the money allocated for such use. By extension, an office or organization,
as well as the maintenance of computer storage systems.

A housekeeper is a person employed to manage a household, and the domestic

staff. According to the Victorian Era Mrs Beeton's Book of Household Management,
the housekeeper is second in command in the house and "except in large
establishments, where there is a house steward, the housekeeper must consider
his/herself as the immediate representative of her mistress".
