Tutorial 2 Q

This document contains 8 problems related to indicating instruments: 1) Calculate the current that will cause a 20 division deflection on a meter with a 1A full scale and 100 division deflection. 2) Calculate the percentage error of a 300V moving iron voltmeter reading 200V DC instead of 250V AC. 3) Calculate the error of a 250V moving iron voltmeter reading 250V 50Hz AC instead of 250V DC. 4) Estimate the deflection of a moving iron instrument for a 5A current given its inductance formula and spring constant.

Tutorial 2 Indicating Instruments

2010

1) A meter has a full scale value of 1A, which causes a deflection of 100 scale divisions. Find the current that will cause a deflection of 20 divisions. Assume that spring control is used in the instrument and has a mean deflection torque is proportional to I 2 2) The coil of a 300V moving iron voltmeter has a resistance of 500 and an inductance of 0.8H. The instrument reads correctly at 50 Hz AC supply and takes 100- mA at full scale deflection. What is the percentage error in the instrument reading when it is connected to 200VDC supply? 3) A 250V moving-iron voltmeter takes a current of 0.1A when it is connected to a 250VDC supply. The coil has an inductance of 0.5H. Determine the error in the reading when the meter is connected to a 250V, 50Hz AC supply, assuming that the voltmeter reads correctly at DC supply. 4) The inductance of a moving iron instrument is given by L = (10+5-2)H, where is the deflection in radians from zero position. The spring constant is 1210-6 Nm/rad. Estimate the deflection for a current of 5A. 5) The moving coil of a PMMC milli-ammeter has 60 turns, a width of 20mm and a length of 30mm. The working field is uniform and radial, of value 50mT. (a) Find the deflecting torque of the coil when carrying a current of 2.5mA. (b) The deflection produced for a current of 0.025 amps is 90. Find the deflection of pointer for a current of I/4 amps, if the control torque is provided by (i) spring control (ii) gravity control. 6) The coil of a PMMC voltmeter has a length of 4cm and width of 3cm and has 100 turns wound on it. The control spring exerts a torque of 2.510-4 Nm when the deflection is 50 divisions on the scale of the meter. If the flux density of the magnetic field in the air gap is 1 Wb/m, estimate the resistance that must be put in series with the coil to give 1V/div. Resistance of the voltmeter is 10k. 7) A spring-controlled, dynamometer type ammeter has a full-scale of 100mA DC without a shunt connected to the moving coil. Calculate the required value of a shunt to extend the meter to 1A DC full-scale if the moving coil resistance is 5. Assume the fixed coils can carry 1A current. 8) Two PMMC-ammeters, each of full scale 20A, are joined in series in a d.c. circuit carrying a current of 10A. Ammeter A has a coil resistance of 1000 and an external shunt of resistance 0.02. The corresponding values for ammeter B are 1500 and 0.01. By mistake, the two shunts are found to be interchanged in the connection. What are the readings of the two instruments?
