1. System Unit
• The system unit is the part of a computer that houses the main electronic components. It is often
referred to as the "computer case" or "tower."
• Motherboard: The main circuit board containing the CPU, memory (RAM), and other essential
components.
• Central Processing Unit (CPU): Often called the "brain" of the computer, responsible for processing
data and instructions.
• Power Supply Unit (PSU): Supplies power to the computer’s internal components.
• Storage Devices: Hard disk drive (HDD), Solid-state drive (SSD), and Optical drives (e.g., DVD drive).
Cooling Systems: Fans and heat-sinks to prevent overheating.
Class Activity 1: You have been provided with an image(Fig2a) of the system unit. Print the image, paste it in
your notebook, and label the parts, or draw a sketch of it in your notebook and label the components
Fig. 2a Fig. 2b
Label these ports in your notebook. You do not need to
draw this one
2. Peripherals
• Peripherals are external devices connected to a computer that provide input, output, or storage
functions.
Types of Peripherals:
3. Computer Software
Software refers to the set of instructions that tell the hardware what to do. It is broadly classified into two
types: system software and application software.
A. System Software
• System software helps manage and run the computer hardware. It provides a platform for application
software to operate.
B. Application Software
• Application software is designed to perform specific tasks for the user, such as word processing,
gaming, or photo editing.
Class Activity 2:
Create a faceless video of five examples each of system software and application software.
Class Summary
The system unit contains essential components like the CPU and motherboard, while peripheral devices
include input and output devices. Software is divided into system software, which runs the hardware, and
application software, which allows users to perform specific tasks.
