4:
Internet services technologies
Types of websites
A website is a collection of
• web pages (the content – each web page is a file
of its own)
• supporting files such as formatting information,
images, movies, sounds and JavaScript
programming.

Content and formatting usually contained in text files

Website usually a single folder with subfolders
Static versus dynamic
Static websites
• Page displays in the same way every time, and
for different users
• Pages stored in HTML
• To change content, the page has to be opened,
changed, and stored again (like a Word
document)
• .htm of .html pages are usually static
Dynamic websites
• Pages generated ‘on the go’
• Page might differ according to user’s stored
preferences
• When the page loads, HTML-page is created by
the software running on the server, and sent to
your browser
• URL contains a lot of parameters after the name
• Pages stored in .php, .asp and .jsp

• Example – Facebook – page is not downloaded

‘as is’ (statically) for each user that views it.
Interactive web pages
• Flash-applets are created using Adobe-Flash and
need a plugin to run
• JavaScript is a programming language used to
create small ‘script’ programs that run on the client
computer/device
• Interactive pages are not necessarily dynamic.
The interactive elements on a web page only help
to make a page dynamic if it affects the
parameters sent to the server when you click on a
link.
Advantages / Disadvantages of the
types of web pages

Static pages
• Relatively simple to design
• Don’t need as much server power
• Designed for client side only
• Can be interactive (Flash / javascript / HTML 5)
• Ideal for pages that don’t need to change often
Advantages / Disadvantages of the
types of web pages

Dynamic pages:
• Adapt to user needs and preferences
• Need more development resources
• Need more powerful servers
• Need server-side programming and database skills
• Perfect for online stores, etc.
• Makes the social web possible (blogs, wikis, etc.)
• More comprehensive, interactive web experience
• Ideal for pages that need to change frequently
Location-based
services sites
• Often used with social networking sites

• E.g. with Foursquare you can ‘check in’ to a

coffee shop using the GPS on your cellphone.
• Then your friends can see where you are, and
who you are with
• Some businesses use this to award loyalty points.
• Businesses can send advertising to their
customers if they come near a shop!
Accessibility of websites on
mobile devices
• Web designers include code in their pages to
– let the page resize to fit the screen
– make the page work better with a mobile browser.

• Mobiele websites often have an ‘m’ prefix and

a domain ending with .mobi
Accessibility of websites on
mobile devices
Some people prefer to use an app because it is able to
• transfer less data, leading to faster speeds
• give users a more user-friendly mobile interface
• give users more control over what they can do
• allow users to receive automatic notifications when
content on the web page is updated.

• Examples: News24, Facebook, etc.

Supporting technologies
• In Module 2.2: E-communications,
we discussed protocols:
A Protocol is a set of rules used to
encode and decode data for transmission
over a network or the Internet.

• Can you still remember what these protocols are

used for?
SMTP, POP3, FTP, HTTP,
HTTPS and VoIP:
Supporting technologies
RSS (Really Simple Syndication)
• A web or news feed that automatically provides users
with updated content or notifications of new content.
This content can then be accessed from a central
application
RSS feeds can alert you
• to new blog entries on blogs you subscribe to
• to new blogs or articles that match your search criteria
• to new video clips on YouTube channels you subscribe
to
• to new music on iTunes
• when your name appears in web searches
• to items you might be interested in on sites like eBay
Supporting technologies
SEO (Search Engine Optimisation)
A strategy or technology used to obtain a high-
ranking placement in the search results page of a
search engine such as Google.
RIA (Rich Internet Applications)
A web application designed to deliver the functions
and features of a traditional desktop application, e.g.
Google Docs and PayPal
Supporting technologies
Security services
DNS (Domain Name System)
• ICANN (Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and
Numbers) keeps track of all the URLs on the Internet
• URLs and what IP addresses they are linked to is stored
on DNS servers across the Internet
• URL registration has to be renewed each year
SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) Certificate providers
• Uses digital certificates to confirm websites’ identities
• A SSL transaction can only take place if the URL and IP
address of the site you are communicating with matches
the ones registered in the certificate
Internet vs. intranet vs. extranet
• Internet - a worldwide computer network,
consisting of devices, computers and
networks connected to each other.
• Intranet - An organisation’s private
network which is an Internet-like
environment consisting of documents and
resources relating to the organisation’s
business.
• Extranet - An organisation’s intranet (or
part thereof) which is available to other
users outside the organisation.
