Worksheet 2: Transmission Speed

Data can be transmitted via several methods. Complete the table below to show their
transmission speeds and method of transmission.

Transmission Speeds: Very high, High, Medium or Slow

Data sent as: Electricity, Radio waves or Light

Method Transmission Speed Data sent as…

Fibre Optic Cable Very high light

Coaxial cable High Radio waves

WiFi slow radio waves

CAT5 medium Electricity

Explain what the internet backbone is

The Internet backbone can be simply defined as the core of the Internet. Here, the largest and
fastest networks are linked together with fiber-optic connections and high-performance routers.
Internet networks are primarily owned and operated by commercial, educational, government or
military entities.

Explain what bandwidth is and how it relates to your Internet connection speed

Bandwidth specifically refers to the capacity at which a network can transmit data. For example, if
the bandwidth of a network is 40 Mbps, it implies that the network cannot transmit data faster than
40 Mbps in any given case.

Explain how fibre optic cable differs from copper cable

Copper carries electrical pulses along its metal strands. Fiber optics, on the other hand, carry pulses
of light along flexible glass threads. This difference often equates to fiber being the best solution for
a new or upgraded network, and therefore being worth the heavier up-front investment.

Calculate the time to download each of the following

Networks
Worksheet 2
File size Download speed Time to download
5MB 8Mbps 5 seconds
100MB 64Mbps 12 second
1GB 8Mbps 16 minutes 40 seconds
1GB 64Mbps 2 minutes 5 seconds

Complete the table below with the advantages and disadvantages of wireless connectivity

Advantages Disadvantages
They offer mobility and flexibility, are cost- They also pose security risks, have a limited
effective, and are highly scalable. coverage area, are susceptible to interference,
and have limited bandwidth.

Explain what buffering is and why it occurs

Buffering is if something like a video plays faster than it is being downloaded or storing some of the
file in a buffer until it can begin playing the whole thing.
