T SEEM S fitting that this little book o f

personal testimonies to answered prayer
should have a brief introductory word as t o
how they came t o be written The question
.

has been aske d by some who read many o f

these testimonies as they appeared in the
pages o f The Sunday School Times : How “

could you write such personal and s acred

written them but for a very clear God give n

The story is as follows : W hen in Canada

on our first f urloughs I was frequen tly
amazed at t h e meredul-ity expressed when
d efin ite testimony was given to an answer t o
prayer Sometimes th is was shown by an
.

ex pressive shrug o f th e shoulde rs sometimes

,

b y a sudden silence or turning o f the topic o f

conversation and sometimes more openly by
,

the query : How do you know t hat it might

not have happened so anyway ?
,

Gradually the impression deepened : I f

The more I thought o f what it would mean

impossible But I know now that the th ing

.
, , ,

the impelling sense that the record o f answers

to prayer m ust be written gave me no rest .

It was at the close o f the 1 908 1 0 fu r lough -

during which as a family we had been

, ,

blessed with many and to our weak faith , ,

wonder f ul answe r s to prayer that my old

est son urged me to put down in some definite
form the answers to prayer o f my li fe and ,

extracted f rom me a solemn promise that I

would do so .

But months passe d after returning to

China and the record had not been touched
,
.

Then came a sudden and serious illness which

threatened my li f e when the doctor told me
,

I must not delay in getting my a ffairs in

order .
Foreword
It was then that an overwhelming sense o f
reg ret took possession o f me that I had n ot
set down the prayer testimonies and sol,

emn ly I covenanted with the Lord that i f he

would raise me up they should be written .

Th ere was no more question o f what

others might think the on e thought was to
,

obey The Lo r d raised me up ;and although

.

he had to deal with me ve ry ste r nly once

'

more be fore I really set myself to the task ,

the testimonies that are given here we r e

written at last — most o f them in odd mo
ments o f time during strenuous missionary
journeys among the heathen .

Thus it will be seen that these incidents o f

answered prayer are not given as being mo r e

O h n o t For him to have done so would

have been great unkindness For instance : .

when I was a young woman I prayed f or

God showed me very clearly that I was pray

gave what was infinitely bett er I have .

Often praised him for denying my prayer ;

The most precious recollections o f early

About a year after my confession o f Ch rist

When Easter S unday m orning came it was

me as the wi f e Of a pioneer missionary for ,

alm ost thirty years has been perhaps the most

diffi cult and constant problem o f my mission
ary li f e In connection with the solving o f
.

this problem I have seen some o f the most

,

precious evidences o f God s willingness t o ’

undertake in th e daily details o f li f e .

The f ollowing story must be given in de

striking instances o f how God in his own ,

wonderful way can work out the seemingly

,

impossible .

Returning h ome to our station from an

unusually strenuous autum n s touring I ’
,

p lanned as usual to give t he month o f De

c em b er to the children s sewing so as t o

leave J anuary largely free for a Bible

women s training class But my health

.

broke down and I could make scarcely any

,

he adway with the thirty five or forty gar -

be f ore the children returned t o their school

in Che f oo By the eighteenth o f December
.

we decided to can cel the class on account o f

my ill health ;and to all the women except

You ! I exclaimed astonished why

She was so insistent that at last in fear ,

That night I was puz zled Why should .

from quite another part Of O ntario enclosing ,
