SECONDARY STORAGE
SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES:
A secondary storage device refers to any non-volatile storage device that is internal or external to the
computer. A computer with secondary storage that saved the file before the power turned off would
be able to recover the last saved version of the file.
It is alternatively referred to as external memory, secondary memory, and auxiliary storage.
EXAMPLES OF SECONDARY STORAGE
• Hard drive
• Floppy disk
• CD
• DVD
• Pen Drives/flash drives
• Blue Ray Disk

Purpose of a Secondary Storage Device
most common uses for secondary storage devices include:

• Data backups
• Disaster recovery
• Long-term data archiving
• Remote storage of critical, classified, or secure information
• Additional or portable storage space for downloaded files

HARD DRIVE:
• A hard disk drive---HD or HDD
• non-volatile data storage device.
• It is usually installed internally in a computer, attached
directly to the disk controller of the computer's motherboard.
• A hard drive can be used to store any data, including pictures,
music, videos, text documents, and any files created or downloaded. Also, hard drives store
files for the operating system and software programs that run on the computer.
SSD SOLID STATE DRIVE:
• SSD
• It stands for Solid State Drive, a mass storage device
like HDDs.
• It is more durable.
• It needs less power as compared to hard disks, is
lightweight, and has 10x faster read and write speed as
compared to hard disks.
• SSDs are costly as well.
• SSDs serve an equivalent function as hard drives, their
internal components are much different.
• Since SSDs haven’t any moving parts, they do not need to “spin up”. It ranges from 150GB
to a few and more TB.
External HARD DRIVE:
• There are also stand-alone devices called external hard
drives.
• or portable hard drives that backup data on computers and
expand the available space.
• External hard drives come in many shapes and sizes.
Some are large, about the size of a book, while others are
about the size of a large smartphone.
HDD BEING REPLACED BY SSD
• SSDs (solid-state drives) have started to replace HDDs (hard disk drives) because of the
distinct performance advantages they have over HDD.
Practice Questions:
1. Do some research, using the internet, to find out all the different ways to store music files and
movie files. Draw a table and show all the benefits and drawbacks of each of the methods you
have identified.

2. Explain: Hard Disk Drives and Solid-State Drives.

3. What are the benefits of secondary storage devices?
4. Give two reasons why one may prefer to have an SDD than an HDD on a laptop/computer.
5. Identify memory and storage devices.
6. Divide the following into memory and storage devices.
i. Hard disk,
ii. Pen drive,
iii. RAM,
iv. DVD,
v. ROM
