ACTIVITY: FORENSIC CHEMISTRY OF POISONS

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the role of poisons in forensic chemistry, understand their effects on the human
body, and analyze real-life case studies.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

1. Research materials (books, articles, online resources)

2. Access to case studies or documentaries on poison-related incidents.
3. Poster boards or visual presentation tools
4. Markers, pens, and other art supplies

PROCEDURE

1. Introduction
 History of poisons in crime
 Concept of forensic toxicology and its role in identifying poisons
2. Research Assignment
 Groupings: 4 members in each group
 Specific poison or toxic substance (one) per group
o Sulfuric acid
o Nitric acid
o Hydrochloric acid
o Sodium hydroxide
o Potassium hydroxide
o Ammonium ion hydroxide
o Lead
o Arsenic
o Mercury
o Copper
o Zinc chloride
o Nitrate
o Castor oil
o Opium
o Alcohol
 Research the following aspects
o Chemical properties of poison
o Sources and availability
o Modes of administration
o Mechanism of toxicity
o Historical and notable cases involving the poison
3. Case study analysis
 Provide a real-life case study involving the use of poison.
 Analyze the cause of death and contribution to legal proceedings.
4. Poster or Digital Presentation
 Create a poster or digital presentation summarizing research on the assigned poison and the
analysis of the case study.
 Include visuals, diagrams, and relevant chemical structures.
5. Group presentations
 Present findings, discussing the poison’s properties, historical context, and forensic analysis in the
assigned case study.
 Q and A
6. Reflection and Analysis
 Reflect on the impact of forensic chemistry in solving cases involving poisons.
