What is
REPORTED
SPEECH?
Reported speech is
used to say what
someone else said
or even what we
have said.
Reported speech= Indirect
speech
Direct speech:
The little girl said, “it is my turn to play with the bike now.”

Indirect speech:
She said (that) it was her turn to play with the bike then.
4 Steps for Using Reported Speech

The little girl said, “it is my turn to play with the


bike now.” She said (that) it was her turn to play
with the bike then.

Direct Speech:
Jeje said, “My holiday starts next week.”
Indirect Speech: She said (that) her holiday started
the following week.

Direct Speech:
“I left my wallet here”, said Tomi.
Indirect Speech: He said (that) He had left his
wallet there.
Backshift Tenses

Simple Present Tense —> Simple past


tense “I wake up at 5 a.m. every
morning.”

Simple Past Tense —> Past

Imperative Sentence to Indirect Speech

She said to me, “Please help me.” (Request)

My mom told me, “Respect the elders.” (Advice)

The police said to the man, “Open the door.”

Imperative Sentence to Indirect Speech
Rules:
Use ‘To’ if it is an affirmative sentence.
“ Bring me a cup of tea,” said Nuna to Nisa.
-> Nuna said Nisa to bring her a cup of tea.

Use ‘not to’ if the sentence begins with “don’t”.


“ Don’t disturb my class” said the teacher.
-> The teacher advised the students not to disturb her class.

Omit the word ‘please’. Use the word ‘ request’ for a request sentence.
“Please give me some water,” Joni said to them.
-> He requested them to give him some water to drink.

Use the word ‘ordered’ for an order sentence.


-> He ordered her to be careful.
1. Please open the door quickly.
2. Have a cup of cappuccino.
3. You wash your hand first and then eat.
4. Kindly bring the book to me.
5. Please forgive my meticulousness but you have spelled it
wrong.
6. Don’t ever call me a loser.
7. Watch your step before taking it.
8. Please grant me a loan.
9. Play with intensity and courage.
10.Don’t ever touch my phone.
Yes/No Questions

When we report a Yes/No question, we use whether or if.

Example:

Direct: Suma said to me, ‘Are you interested in this offer?’


Indirect: Suma asked me if I was interested in that offer.

Direct: The teacher said to me, ‘Do you know the


answer?’
Indirect: The teacher asked me if / whether I knew the
answer.
1. Martha said to Susie, ‘Will you trust a guy like
Martin?’
2. ‘Do you think you know better than your dad?’ the
angry mother asked.
3. Do you really come from China?’ the prince asked.
4. Do you speak English?’ he said.
5. “Do you like me?”, Jimin said to Rina.
6. “Did you meet Amy?” He said.
7. “Did you bring your homework?” Ms Cindy said.
8. Liana’s brother said, “did you lie to me?”
9. Jody said to Lana, “did you see Abraham
here?” 10.Ibrahim said to them, “did you
bring umbrella?”
W/H Question

When we report a Wh-question, we use a reporting verb


like
asked or

enquired.

Example:

Direct: He said to me, ‘Where do you live?’


Indirect: He asked me
Direct: Mother said to me, ‘What are you doing there?’
Indirect: Mother asked me
1. ‘What do you want?’ he said to her.
2. He said, ‘How’s your mother?.’
3. He enquired, ‘When do you intend to pay me?’
4. ‘Do you really come from China?’ the prince asked.
5. ‘Do you speak English?’ he said.
6. Remi said, “ Where did you learn English?
7. Dinda said to her, “When did you go to college?”
8. Nina Said, “When did Tami finish her homework?”
9. Tomi’s Father said, “Who is the girl?”
10.Bella’s Mother said, “where did you put your phone?
Man: What do you do?
Woman: I work at a tech company.
Man: Oh, what do you do there?
Woman: I design
software. Man: Do you
like your job? Woman:
Yeah, I enjoy it.
