Midas Quiz Bee Mechanics
I. General Rules
1. Each team shall consist of 3 members, all of whom should be students only.
2. Immediate disqualification will be imposed on those who will not show up in the
venue 10 minutes before the start of the event.
3. Illustration boards and pens will be provided by the organizers.
4. The team must bring at least one (1) calculator and there will be no brand
and specifications restriction.
5. The questions will only be read twice. After the 2nd time the question is read, the
quizmaster will say “GO”, and only then the timer will start.
6. After the time limit, the whistle will be blown by the timekeeper then the
contestants must stop writing and immediately raise their answer boards.
7. Participants must provide complete answers with units and/or direction, as required
by the question.
8. In the event of a tie, groups will be asked one sudden-death question. The first
group to raise the correct answer within the allotted time wins the tiebreaker.
9. Any form of cheating or inappropriate behavior will result in immediate
disqualification of the group.
1. The categories for Easy and Intermediate rounds will consist of the following:
• General Mathematics
• Surveying
• Geotechnical
• Hydraulics
• Structural
• Midas-related Functions
2. The contest will be divided into three rounds: Easy, Intermediate, and Final.
Point system will be as follows:
Easy Intermediate
Number of Questions 10 10
Number of Points 1 2
Total 10 20
3. The points garnered in these first two rounds will be the grounds for
elimination—only the top 4 schools will get to move to the final round for
the quiz bee which is the University Feud.
University Feud – Quiz Bee Final Round
Objective:
Teams will compete to guess the most popular responses to survey questions related to
civil engineering, with the goal of earning the most points.
Team Composition:
• Each team must consist of 5 participants per school.
• Teams will represent their respective universities
Game Setup:
• The host will ask a series of questions related to civil engineering. These questions
have been previously answered by civil engineering students and civil engineers in a
survey.
• Each question will have multiple possible answers, ranked according to how many
respondents provided that answer.
o For example, "Name a common tool used in surveying" with answers such as
"Level," "Theodolite," etc.
Round Mechanics:
1. Face-Off:
o One player from each team approaches the podium.
o The host asks a civil engineering-related question, and the first player to buzz
in gets the opportunity to answer.
o If the answer is the most popular (highest number of survey responses), that
team can choose to "play" or "pass" the question to the other team.
o If the answer is not the most popular, the other player gets a chance to answer.
The team with the highest-ranking answer wins the face-off.
I. Overview
Mechanics:
1. Design Parameters:
Each team receives a set of project requirements that includes specific
parameters such as span length, width, height, and minimum passage clearances.
2. Material Selection:
Teams must choose a type of truss bridge (e.g., Pratt, Warren, Howe). Initial
materials will be provided to the team, and during discussions in this stage, they
will decide if additional materials are to be purchased from the "Midas
Hardware."
3. Budgeting:
The assigned cost engineer shall fill up the Purchase Order Form and have it
delivered to the “Midas Hardware” should the team decide to purchase
additional materials.
Mechanics:
1. Teams must follow the type of truss as initially submitted in their design plans.
Deductions shall apply for changes in the type of truss.
2. Additional materials can be purchased if needed, but prices will be higher than
in the PP stage. A Purchase Order (PO) must be filled out for all additional
materials.
3. The Midas Hardware, at this stage, is only open for certain hours as announced
by the organizers.
Testing Criteria:
- Strength Test:
o The bridge must be able to carry the load for 5 seconds before adding
another load.
o Placing of loads will stop once the bridge collapses or the maximum
specified load is reached. Where:
Loads = container weight + hook + platform +weight
- Material Cost: The cost score is calculated by dividing the least expensive
bridge built by all teams by the cost of the team's own bridge.
- Bridge Weight: Strength-to-bridge-weight-ratio shall be scored and recorded
according to the following computation:
BW Score: Load Weight / Bridge Weight
Strength 45%
Cost 40%
Initial Plan Compliance 5%
Bridge Weight 10%
Time Efficiency Bonus Points
