Decimals: Multiplication and Division

Decimals are numbers with a fractional part, and they can be multiplied and divided just like whole

numbers. Understanding the rules for multiplying and dividing decimals is important for solving

problems involving money, measurements, and more.

### Key Concepts:

- To multiply decimals, multiply the numbers as whole numbers, then count the total number of

decimal places in both numbers and place the decimal point in the product.

- To divide decimals, move the decimal point of the divisor (the number you're dividing by) to the

right to make it a whole number, and move the decimal point of the dividend the same number of

places. Then divide as usual.

### Solved Examples:

1. Multiply 2.5 by 3.6:

Multiply as whole numbers: 25 × 36 = 900. Since there are two decimal places (one in each

number), the result is 9.00.

2. Divide 6.48 by 1.2:

Move the decimal point of 1.2 one place to the right to make it 12. Do the same for 6.48 to make it

64.8. Now divide: 64.8 ÷ 12 = 5.4.

3. Multiply 4.32 by 0.5:

Multiply as whole numbers: 432 × 5 = 2160. Since there are three decimal places in total, the

result is 2.160.

4. Divide 15.75 by 0.25:

Move the decimal point two places to the right in both numbers to make it 1575 ÷ 25. Now divide:

1575 ÷ 25 = 63.

5. Multiply 7.2 by 0.03:

Multiply as whole numbers: 72 × 3 = 216. Since there are three decimal places in total, the result

is 0.216.

### Real-World Applications:

- Decimals are used in money transactions, where prices and amounts are often represented with

two decimal places.

- In science, decimals are used to measure quantities like mass, length, and volume.

- Decimals are used in sports to record precise times, such as in races and competitions.
