no exaggeration that modern jobs would be almost inconceivable without the use of
information technology.

One of the main concerns of 21th century is relation between information technology

That is why, the purpose of this modules is to identify information technology impacts as

Let’s learn
The reality is that technology and AI are used for detecting
fraud, conducting research, producing translations, and faster
logistics, to almost anything. The digital world today makes it
possible to access any form of information. However, with the
number of analysts, clients, smartphones, and even social media
sites, the word “Digital Ethics’’ is dominant today.
Ethics or moral philosophy- is a branch of philosophy that
"involves systematizing, defending, and recommending
concepts of right and wrong behavior."

Examples of Ethical Behavior

HONESTY
INTEGRITY. ...
PROMISE-KEEPING & TRUSTWORTHINESS
LOYALTY
FAIRNESS. ...
CONCERN FOR OTHERS
RESPECT FOR OTHERS
LAW ABIDING
etc…

Digital Ethics -is the study of how to manage oneself

ethically, professionally and in a clinically sound manner
via online and digital mediums.

Information technology (IT)-IT ethics involves the nature and grounds of

moral judgment, standards and rules of conduct in using IT for decision making.
IT users encounter more ethical challenges in the age of IT because using IT to
do something that is not illegal does not imply it is ethical.

Types of Digital Ethics

▪ Personal Digital Ethics -encompass how individual users honor one
another’s right to self-determination online.

5
Examples:
• In the physical world, your location has little impact on how you
should treat other people whether you're on public or private
property, the expectations of courtesy are essentially the same.
• You shouldn’t include someone in a photo who did not consent to
being in it if you intend to share it online.

▪ Corporate Digital Ethics-primarily revolves around the practices of

online platforms like social networks collecting sensitive information
about users. This collection is often necessary for platforms to deliver
their product’s experience, but there is no uniform expectation for what
can and should be done with this information.
Examples:
• Companies commonly take the attitude that if their user agreement,
no matter how arcane, allows for the sale of user data, there is
nothing wrong with selling any data to any “partner” for any
reason.
• Premium options, where services promise to accept payment to
completely forego the sale of that user’s data, should be more
prevalent.

Ethical behavior entails knowing the right thing to do in a given

situation. It may suggest addressing difficult or subtle questions of
trustworthiness, respect, responsibility, rightness, fairness or equity.

Unethical behavior involves actions that fall outside of what is

considered morally right or proper for a person, profession or industry.
Just as individuals can behave unethically, so can entire organizations.

Ethical Behavior of Digital Technology

• Abiding by the policies and procedures of other networks that are

accessed.
• Being polite and using appropriate language.
• Deleting unwanted messages or old data from computers and servers.
• Enforcing appropriate used and reporting misuse or security issues.
• Running antivirus software on downloaded files, attachments,
peripherals, or disks.
• Signing correspondence.
• Using online time efficiently.
• Using the internet ethically and legally.

6
Unethical Behavior of Digital Technology

• Digital Plagiarisms - anyone with a website can

potentially republish the content for the whole world
to see, without citing the original author. Because it is
so easy to copy and paste digital information.

• Breaking copyright and software theft- means the

unauthorized or illegal copying, sharing or usage of
copyright-protected software programs. Software
theft may be carried out by individuals, groups or, in
some cases, organization ns who then distribute the
unauthorized software copies to users.

• Improper use of digital resources- examples

smartphones has a bad reputation in classrooms
and there have been strong cases for banning
them in schools.

• Securing information privacy and

confidentiality- the existence of informational
privacy rights means that someone is under a
duty either not to disclose information or to
prevent unauthorized access to information by
others.

• Computer fraud - is a cybercrime and the act

of using a computer to take or alter electronic
data, or to gain unlawful use of a computer or
system.

Importance of digital ethics is the consideration of

our choices online. This is to do with how we represent
ourselves and whether the choices made reveals our goal and ambition
positively.
