Tutorial Sheet-6
1. Find the area of the region R enclosed by the parabola y = x2 and the line y = x+2.
2. Using polar integration, find the area of the region R in the xy-plane enclose by the
√
circle x2 + y 2 = 4, above the line y = 1, and below the line y = 3x.
3. Find the area of the region enclosed between the circles x2 + y 2 = 2y, x2 + y 2 = 4y,
and the lines y = x, y = −x.
4. Find the total mass of the circular plate x2 + y 2 ≤ 1 whose density at any point is
equal to the square of the distance of the point from origin.
6. Find the centre of gravity of a plate whose density ρ(x, y) is constant and is bounded
by the curve y = x2 and y = x + 2. Also find the moments of inertia about the
axes.
7. Find the volume of the wedgelike solid that lies beneath the surface z = 16 − x2 − y 2
√
and above the region R bounded by the curve y = 2 x, the line y = 4x − 2, and
the x-axis.
9. Setup the triple integration to find the volume of tetrahedron D with vertices
(0, 0, 0), (1, 1, 0), (0, 1, 0), and (0, 1, 1) in the orders: (a) dzdydx (b) dydzdx (c)
dxdydz. Show that all these integrals yield same volume.
10. (a) Find the volume of the region D enclosed by the surfaces z = x2 + 3y 2 and
z = 8 − x2 − y 2 .
(b) Find the volume of the solid enclosed between the surfaces x2 + y 2 = a2 and
x2 + z 2 = a2 .
11. Find the limits of integration in cylindrical coordinates for integrating a function
f (r, θ, z) over the region D bounded below by the plane z = 0, laterally by the
circular cylinder x2 + (y − 1)2 = 1, and above by the paraboloid z = x2 + y 2 .
12. Find the volume of the “ice cream cone” D cut from the solid sphere ρ ≤ 1 by the
cone φ = π/3 (cone opening up from the origin, making an angle of π/3 radians
with the positive z-axis).
13. Find the average value of F (x, y, z) = xyz throughout the cubical region D bounded
by the coordinate planes and the plane x = 2, y = 2 and z = 2 in the first octant.
14. A solid fills the region between two concentric spheres of radii a and b, 0 < a < b.
The density at each point is inversely proportional to its square of distance from
the origin. Find the total mass.
15. A cylindrical hole with radius b is drilled through the sphere x2 +y 2 +z 2 = 1 keeping
z-axis as the axis of the cylindrical hole. Determine b such that the remaining
volume of the sphere (after the drill) is one-eighth of the original volume of the
sphere.
