Statement of purpose for a zoology degree specializing in veterinary sciences and fisheries:

My name is M. Imran Ul Haq and I am from Pakistan. I have completed my MPhil in Zoology
from the University of Education, Lahore, Pakistan. I am applying Scholarship to further my
studies in zoology, focusing on Veterinary sciences/Animal sciences/parasitology. I hold a
Master’s degree in Zoology, during which I researched on Cystic echinococcosis in ruminants.
During my MPhil, I engaged in several research projects related to animal sciences gaining
valuable experience in both laboratory and fieldwork (including MPhil Thesis: Prevalence and
demographic attributes of Cystic echinococcosis in ruminants of District Vehari. (Abstract
accepted for publication)

• Molecular detection of various vector borne blood parasite in African Lion (Panthera leo): a
pioneer study in Pakistan.

• Molecular and IN-SILICO study of disease-causing variant in family with cardiovascular disease.

• Epidemiological and associated risk factors of MODY in the population of District Multan.

This research involved fieldwork, sample collection, and laboratory analyses using hematology,
serological, different molecular techniques and statistical analyses using Statistical Software of the
social science (SPSS) software to determine the prevalence rate of CE, Statistics were used for the
purpose of counts, percentage, and frequency for presentation of the results in tables.
From an early age, I have been fascinated by the intricacies of the animal kingdom, intrigued by
the complex interactions that define animal behavior, physiology, and ecology. Growing up in
Pakistan, a country where livestock and fisheries play a pivotal role in the economy and food
security, I was deeply influenced by the challenges and opportunities presented by these sectors.
This early interest led me to pursue a degree in Zoology, through which I have honed my
knowledge and developed a passion for advancing the fields of veterinary sciences and fisheries.
Now, as I seek to further specialize in these areas, I aim to contribute to improving animal health,
livestock management, and aquatic resource sustainability through innovative research and
practical application.

I completed my MPhil in Zoology at the University of Education, Lahore, with a focus on the
safety and quality control of livestock and poultry meat. During this time, I developed a strong
foundation in animal biology, physiology, genetics, and conservation. My coursework and research
have spanned various disciplines, from animal anatomy to ecology, all of which have reinforced
my commitment to understanding how animals thrive in different environments and how we, as
humans, can better manage these resources.

The turning point in my academic journey occurred during my research on poultry production
systems. I was investigating the impact of various husbandry practices on the quality of meat and
animal welfare. I realized that despite significant advancements in animal science, there is still
much work to be done to ensure the sustainability and safety of animal-derived products. This
realization fueled my determination to contribute to the field through a deeper understanding of
veterinary sciences, where animal health, welfare, and productivity intersect. Additionally, my
interest in fisheries was sparked by the increasing global need for sustainable aquaculture systems,
particularly in regions like Pakistan where fisheries are both an economic asset and a critical food
source.
My primary research interests lie at the intersection of veterinary sciences, animal production, and
aquatic health. Specifically, I aim to investigate and address the following areas:

Animal Health and Welfare: Animal health is paramount to the sustainability of livestock
systems. I am interested in exploring ways to improve disease prevention and treatment strategies
in livestock, with an emphasis on zoonotic diseases that can affect both animals and humans.
Veterinary science provides an avenue to understand these challenges and devise methods to
enhance animal well-being while maximizing productivity.

Genetic Breeding and Improvement: Genetic breeding plays a critical role in enhancing
livestock and fish production. My previous research on poultry breeding introduced me to the
complexities of selective breeding for traits such as disease resistance, growth rates, and feed
efficiency. I wish to expand this knowledge and explore how genetic improvement can be applied
to other livestock species and fisheries, particularly in developing regions.

Sustainable Fisheries and Aquaculture: As global demand for fish continues to rise, the need
for sustainable management of fisheries and aquaculture has never been more urgent. I am
particularly interested in researching sustainable aquaculture practices, exploring ways to improve
fish breeding, disease management, and water quality control. My goal is to help develop systems
that not only meet the growing demand for fish but also protect aquatic ecosystems and
biodiversity.

Quality Control of Animal Products: My MPhil research introduced me to the importance of

ensuring food safety in animal products. This is especially critical in developing countries where
foodborne illnesses can have significant public health implications. I want to delve deeper into
understanding the factors that influence the quality and safety of animal-derived foods, particularly
in relation to veterinary practices and environmental factors.

In addition to my academic pursuits, I have gained practical experience that has enhanced my
understanding of the animal sciences. I have participated in several internships and workshops
related to livestock management, veterinary medicine, and fisheries conservation. These
experiences have allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge to real-world challenges, such as
managing livestock diseases, improving farm efficiency, and implementing sustainable fishing
practices.

One of the most rewarding experiences was working with a local fisheries research center, where
I had the opportunity to assist in breeding programs and study the health of aquatic populations.
This experience not only deepened my understanding of fish biology but also exposed me to the
critical challenges faced by the industry, such as overfishing, habitat degradation, and climate
change. These challenges reinforced my desire to contribute to research that will help ensure the
long-term viability of both livestock and fisheries industries.

My ultimate goal is to contribute to the sustainable development of livestock and fisheries

industries in Pakistan and beyond. I am particularly passionate about bridging the gap between
scientific research and practical application. As a researcher and practitioner, I want to help
farmers, veterinarians, and policymakers adopt strategies that improve animal health, enhance
productivity, and protect ecosystems.

In the long term, I envision myself leading research projects that address pressing issues in
veterinary sciences and fisheries. I hope to collaborate with international organizations,
governments, and local communities to develop solutions that are both innovative and grounded
in local realities. Additionally, I aim to contribute to the academic community by mentoring the
next generation of scientists and sharing my findings through publications and conferences.

The PhD program in Zoology, with a specialization in veterinary sciences and fisheries, is an ideal
platform for me to achieve my goals. I am particularly drawn to your program because of its strong
focus on interdisciplinary research and its commitment to addressing global challenges in animal
science and sustainability. The faculty’s expertise in veterinary sciences, coupled with cutting-edge
research in aquaculture and genetic improvement, aligns perfectly with my research interests. I am
excited about the opportunity to learn from leading experts in the field, collaborate with fellow
researchers, and contribute to impactful projects.

Furthermore, the program’s emphasis on practical applications and fieldwork will allow me to gain
the hands-on experience I need to tackle real-world challenges. I am confident that the skills and
knowledge I will acquire through this program will empower me to make meaningful contributions
to the fields of veterinary sciences and fisheries, both in Pakistan and on the global stage.

In conclusion, my academic background, research interests, and professional experience have all
led me to this point, where I am eager to further specialize in veterinary sciences and fisheries. I
am passionate about advancing these fields and am confident that the PhD program will provide
the knowledge, skills, and mentorship necessary to achieve my goals. I look forward to the
opportunity to contribute to your academic community and make a lasting impact on animal health,
production, and sustainability.

Thank you for considering my application.

Sincerely,
M. Imran Ul Haq
