Explain the following Key Words: 1X5= 5 Marks

(a) Pardons : A piece of paper which the church sold which proclaimed to forgive all youre sins the
more money you pay.
(b) Renaissance : A period of time after the middle ages, which started in the late 15th century.
Renaissance means the rebirth of learning
(c) Trade : the act of buying or trading goods and services
(d) Pope : The head bishop of the Catholic Church
(e) Religion : The belief and devotion to worship a god and too persuade afterlife

Write down the following questions with proper explanation:

1. How do you explain the concept of Reformation? 2 Marks


Reformation is the name given to the time in the 16th century when the Catholic church was split into
The Catholic Church and Protestant Church, which is the concept of reformation meaning to reform
or change a religious institution for better.

2. What are the major causes of Reformation? Explain it in your own words. 3 Marks
The Major causes of Reformation was 1) Bad State of the Catholic Church – The Catholic Church
during the Middle ages only cared about political power and money and not about religion which
people thought were wrong. Many bishops and priests often behaved really badly and people thought
why the people in the Church taught one thing and did the opposite.
2)Tax Imposition – Everyone in Europe had to give 1 tenth of everything they grew or earned to
support the Church. This money was often used to build lavish churches and tombs for the popes and
bishops. People felt that they could use this money for the betterment for their own country.
3)Conflict between the kings and Pope – The church owned 1/3 of land in Europe, many kings
thought this was unfair and the thought the pope was “above” them, they wanted to the only sole
ruler in their country.
4)Pardons – The Church sold a piece of paper that would quote on quote “forgive their sins”, the
more money on spend it the more sins it will forgive. Many people in the 16th century thought this
was unjustifiable and was wrong
5) Rebirth of Learning – During the Renaissance rebirth of learning , many Renaissance scholars
found out things which were the opposite of the Churches teachings. The astronomer Copernicus
discovered that the earth and other planets went around the sun while the church taught the
opposite. Many people wondered if some of the other things the Church taught was wrong also.
