Goal-setting plays a crucial role in managing time, staying focused, and making steady progress toward
both personal and academic achievements. Reflecting on my own experiences, I’ve seen the impact of
both failed and successful goals.

A time when I set a goal and didn’t achieve it was when I aimed to complete an entire course module a
week early to give myself extra study time. However, I didn’t manage my time properly and ended up
procrastinating, which led to missing the early deadline I had set for myself. My main issue was
overestimating how much I could accomplish in a short time and not breaking the goal into smaller,
manageable steps. Without clear milestones, I became overwhelmed and ultimately did not finish the
module early as intended.

On the other hand, a time when I set a goal and achieved it was when I committed to finishing a
research paper two days before the actual deadline. For this goal, I created a daily writing schedule,
broke the paper into sections, and stayed disciplined with my timeline. Because I had a specific plan and
realistic deadlines for each step, I was able to complete the paper on time. What made this goal
successful was setting achievable mini-goals and regularly tracking my progress.

Effective goal-setting helps us stay organized and focused. By setting clear objectives, we create a
roadmap that guides us through each task, making larger challenges feel less daunting. Good goals are
specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and time-bound (SMART). They provide clarity, allowing us to
understand what we want to achieve and how to measure success.

Based on these reflections, here are my three goals:

Short-Term Goal: Complete all of my course readings for the week by Friday to give myself extra review
time before the weekend.

Mid-Term Goal: Achieve a B+ or higher in my current course by improving my study habits and seeking
feedback regularly.

Long-term Goal: Graduate with my degree in the next two years by consistently meeting academic
milestones and balancing my coursework with other responsibilities.

By setting these goals, I am confident that I can better manage my time and reduce stress while working
towards long-term success in my education.
