Master of Science in Mechanical Engineering

MASTER’S THESIS PROPOSAL

Six hours of a research thesis are required for the MS degree in Mechanical Engineering (ME). The
research is developed and conducted under the guidance of the student’s Advisory Committee. Please note
that, by university policy, all courses outside the thesis must be formal. Formal courses are courses where
students participate in learning with a faculty member in a formal course of study with a syllabus and
receive a letter grade for the course. Therefore, independent study, graduate research, fieldwork
experience and courses of this type are not included in the definition of formal courses.

A thesis proposal must be attached to this form. The proposal is 2-5 pages long and includes
objectives, relevance to the field, milestones with expected completion dates, and a detailed
description of the work to be accomplished. The inclusion of figures to illustrate ideas is
encouraged. The proposal ensures that both the faculty advisor and student are in mutual
agreement as to the extent and scope of the research work to be completed.

Successful completion of the work in the research proposal, a thesis meeting Graduate College
requirements, and an oral presentation are required in order to obtain a passing grade. Work that
has been completed prior to enrolling for the MS program does not count for credit.
