Display the butterfly cards on the following pages on an interactive whiteboard
or print them for use at a small group table. Show the card for 4 or 5
seconds, asking the kids to figure out the number of wings on each page. Hide
the card. Can students tell you how many wings? Encourage them to use
mental math strategies to determine the number. Show again for a few
seconds if needed. Allow students to share what they think the answer is, then
allow them to share how they were able to figure out the number of wings.

Cute as can be.
I caught five and will keep them
close to me.
My friends caught five
over by a tree!

We keep one on each finger,

and love to watch them fly
We can count them all by fives
if we give it a try!

After students fill in the numbers on the 120 chart, keep the charts to use
with these butterfly chips. Call out a number for students to place their
butterfly chips on to start. For example– Start on “56”—skip count by
____ (2, 5, 10) to the next number and place your butterfly on that number.
