York Business School (YBS) is positioned to be a “career-building" business school — that gives
students strong support in the creation of a clear and realistic career development plan. YBS
offers a good balance of academic learning and clear practical application with solid personal
skills development that will make a difference to employability prospects.
YBS is focused upon encouraging and supporting new business creation — both in terms of new
enterprises, as well as new ventures within existing companies / organisations. It is not focused
upon entrepreneurialism for its own sake. Instead, it is concerned with providing students with
the knowledge in areas such as marketing, people management, finance and project management
— that have a clear application and value for new business creation.
The University and YBS are also committed to developing and supporting businesses that have a
commitment to sustainability and which support the common good. This orientation is
increasingly attractive to investors and to consumers —and so the insights and learnings will
have direct relevance to a future in business leadership.
YBS teaching staff blend academic expertise with strong practitioner experience. This means that
the programmes reflect current business activities and incorporate realistic perspectives to the
world of work.
Staff members have strong business connections that serve to enhance the relevance and value of
their teaching and research. Furthermore, their industry embeddedness provides excellent
networks for their students to interact with, and learn from, industry experts.
YSJ London Campus: Locational Benefits
The campus is located in an excellent business location — very close to the tech- business and
the new venture start-up areas of London’s East End — specifically Barbican, Old Street and
Shoreditch. The campus is located next to one of Amazon’s Head Offices and it is close to other
major businesses that will support the University through the provision of field trips, hosted
projects and in-company talks. The area serves as a centre for digital / tech-business in the UK
and many new initiatives are show-cased in the areas through tech-launches, seminars and
exhibitions. As well as re-enforcing learning, these benefits will contribute to the identification
of future career opportunities.
The campus offers an environment that feels like a modern business setting. The building has a
professional and creative feel that reflects how modern businesses have developed. The smaller
scale of the campus offers the advantage of smaller class sizes, opportunities for more targeted
student support and an ability to generate strong peer network.
