Basic Parts of Computer: Fundamentals
COMPUTER - A computer is an electronic device, operating under the control of instructions stored in its
own memory that can accept data (input), process the data according to specified rules, produce
information (output), and store the information for future use.
Any kind of computers consists of HARDWARE AND SOFTWARE
Hardware- Computer hardware refers to the physical parts or components of a computer such as the
monitor, mouse, keyboard, computer data storage, hard drive disk (HDD), etc. all of which are physical
objects that can be touched.
SOFTWARE - Software is a set of instructions, data or programs used to operate computers and execute
specific tasks
Input Device- Input device is any peripheral (piece of computer hardware equipment to provide data
and control signals to an information processing system such as a computer or other information
appliance (e.g Keyboard, Mouse, Microphone, Touch Pad)
Output Devices- An output device is any piece of computer hardware equipment used to communicate
the results of data processing carried out by an information processing system (such as a computer)
which converts the electronically generated information into human-readable form. (Monitor, Speaker,
Printer, Projector)
2. POWER SUPPLY- an internal hardware component used to supply the components within the
computer with power.
3. MOTHERBOARD- a printed circuit that is the foundation of a computer and allows the CPU, RAM, and
all the computer parts to function with each other.
4. CPU- acronym for "Central Processing Unit." Responsible for handling all instructions and calculation it
receives from other hardware components in the computer and software programs running on the
computer. Often referred to as "Brains of computer."
5. HARD DRIVE- computer's main storage media device, also called a "Hard disk drive."
6. RAM- short for "Random Access Memory." a term used to describe the memory within a computer.
RAM requires power; if power is lost, all data is lost.
7. GRAPHICS CARD- an internal circuit board that allows a display device, such as a monitor, to display
images from the computer.
