When children develop different


types of reading skills early in their lives, they are more likely to be
successful. W e have been through the stage where we started learning to
read. Initially, it was words, then sentences and then phrases and finally
paragraph. So one

There are four types of reading skills that every reader should know: skimming,
scanning, intensive reading, and speed reading.

Skimming is a technique that allows you to quickly read through a text and pick out the
main ideas. This is a useful skill when you need to get an overview of a text or when
you’re looking for specific information.
Scanning is a technique that allows you to quickly read through a text and find specific
information. This is a useful skill when you need to find specific information in a text.
Intensive reading is a technique that allows you to read a text slowly and carefully in
order to understand all the details and nuances. This is a useful skill when you need to
understand a text in depth.
Extensive reading/Speed reading is a technique that allows you to read a text quickly.
This is a useful skill when you need to read a lot of information in a short amount of
time.

Understanding Different Reading Skills

Skimming is used to quickly gather the most important information, or 'gist'. Run your eyes over
the text, noting important information. Use skimming to quickly get up to speed on a current
business situation. It's not essential to understand each word when skimming.

Scanning
Scanning is used to find a particular piece of information. Run your eyes over the text looking for
the specific piece of information you need. Use scanning on schedules, meeting plans, etc. in
order to find the specific details you require. If you see words or phrases that you don't
understand, don't worry when scanning.

Examples of Scanning

Extensive reading
Extensive reading is used to obtain a general understanding of a subject and includes reading
