What I Need to Know

This module was designed and written with you in mind. It is here to help
you master the Parabolas. The scope of this module is to define a parabola
and to determine the standard form of equation of a parabola.

San Juanico Bridge

is a 2.16 kilometer-
long bridge that
connects the islands of
Leyte and Samar. The
bridge is formerly
called the Marcos
Bridge in honor of the
late President
Ferdinand Marcos, the
San Juanico Bridge is https : / / www.google.com. ph / search ? q  san  juanico  bridge & source
the longest bridge in the Philippines. It is also said to be a gift of the
late president to his wife who was a resident of Tacloban City during
her youth. Parabola is a symmetrical open plane curve formed by the
intersection of a cone with a plane parallel to its side. The lower
structure of the San Juanico Bridge shows an example of a parabola
and is the same also with the path of a projectile under the influence
of gravity that follows a curve shape.

In Mathematics 9 we saw that the graph of a quadratic function y =

ax 2+ bx + c is a symmetric U-shaped curve called a parabola. We have
already seen parabolas which open upward or downward, as graphs of
quadratic functions. Here, we will see parabolas opening to the left or
right. Applications of parabolas are presented at the end. In this lesson
we give a more general definition of the parabola, a definition that
emphasizes the geometric properties of the curve.

The module is divided into two (2) lessons, namely:

Lesson 1. The Definition of Parabola

Lesson 2. The Standard Equation of Parabola

After going through this module, you are expected to:

1. define a parabola;
2. determine the standard form of equation of a parabola;
3. convert the standard form of equation of a parabola and vice
versa

3. Draw a horizontal line near the bottom of the page.
4. Push a pushpin into the paper at a point above the center of
the line and slightly lower than the diameter of the smallest
circle.

the pushpin and the line.
6. Poke a hole at the center of the circle. Repeat with the circle
on the other side of the pushpin.
7. Repeat for each circle.
8. Connect the pinpricks to form a parabola.

Guide Questions:

1. Describe each circle as it draw simultaneously and connecting the

pinpricks to form a parabola.

3. What is the purpose of each push pins in the graph of the figure?
4. Describe and compare the distance of each points to the distance of a
horizontal line near the bottom of the page.
5. How would you define a parabola as a set of all points?

What is It
What you will learn here is all about the definition of a parabola.

Parabola
A parabola is the set of all points in a plane such that the distance
of from a fixed line is equal to the distance of from a fixed point that
is not on the fixed line. The fixed line and the fixed point, which lie
in the plane of the parabola, are called the directrix and the focus,
respectively.

What I Have Learned
Fill in the blanks. Supply the appropriate terms to complete the thought of
the statement.
A line segment that passes through the focus of a parabola and has
endpoints on the parabola is called a 1.__________.

The 2.__________ is the chord through a focus parallel to the conic section
directrix. A line is 3._________tangent to a parabola at a point on the parabola
if the line intersects, but does not across the parabola at the point. Any point
on the parabola has the same distance from the 4.______ as it has from the
directrix. 5. _______ divides the parabola into two parts which are mirror
images of each other.

What I Can Do

The parabola has many important applications. It has the property that, if
they are made of material that reflects light, then light that travels parallel to
the axis of symmetry of a parabola and strikes its concave side is reflected to
its focus.

Another example is from the parabolic antenna or parabolic microphone.

Task: In short bond paper, cite five examples that exhibit parabola and
explain the properties on how each part of the parabola works on the example.

2
A parabola has a standard form

h,k +p  and the directrix is y = k - p. If the parabola is rotated so that its

vertex is  h,k  and its axis of symmetry is parallel to the x-axis, it has an

equation of  y - k  = 4p  x - h  , where the focus is  h+p,k  and the directrix is

2

x = h - p. It would also be in our best interest to cover another form that the
equation of a parabola may appear as y =  x - h  + k, where h represents the
2

distance that the parabola has been translated along the x-axis, and k
represents the distance the parabola has been shifted up and down the y-
axis.

Example 1 Find an equation of the parabola with focal point at (0,-2)

and directrix y = 2.

Solution : The focal point lies along the y – axis. Since the vertex is the
midpoint of the line segment from the focal point to the

directrix, the vertex is at the origin. So the parabola is in

standard position with axis along the y – axis. The equation of

us to sketch the graph of any parabola whose directrix is

parallel to one of the coordinates axes.

Example 2 Find the focal point and directrix of the parabola with

equation 2y 2 + 8y - x + 7 = 0 .

Solution: We first complete the square on the y-variable so that we can

compare this equation with the equation of a parabola in
