CLASS:10
ANSWER ASSIGNMENT
Q1) Determine k so that 3k-2, 2 k 2 – 5k+8 and 4k+3 are the three
consecutive terms of an AP
Sol: 3k-2, 2 k 2 – 5k+8 and 4k+3 are the three consecutive terms of an AP
a2 - a1 = a3 - a2
4 k – 17k+15 =0
2
4 k – 12k – 5k +15 =0
2
4k (k-3) -5(k-3) = 0
(k-3) (4k-5) =0
5
K=3 or k= 4
Q2) For what value of n, the sum of n terms of an AP, whose first term is 6
and common difference is 40 is equal to the sum of 2n terms of another
AP, whose first term is 40 and common difference is 6.
Sol: for 1st series
1st term = 6
common difference=40
n
sum of n terms Sn = 2 {2a + (n-1) d}
n
Sn = 2 {2 × 6 +(n-1) 40}
=n (6 +20n -20) -------(i)
=n(20n-14)
for 2nd series,
first term = 40
common difference =6
2n
S2n = 2 {{2 × 40 +(2n -1)6}
=n {80 +12n -6}
=n {74 +12n} -----------(2)
d=±6
a = 1, d = ± 6
Hence, the required numbers are (-5, 1 and 7) or (7, 1 and -5).
Q4) In an A.P. the first term is 2 and sum of the first five terms is one-fourth
of the sum of the next five terms. Show that the 20th term is -112.
n
Solu: a = 2 Sn = 2 [2a + (n – 1) d]
1
S5 = 4 (S10 –S5)
1
10 + 10d = 4 (20 + 45d -10 -10d)
40 + 40d = 10 + 35d
d=-6
Q5) Which term of the sequence 114, 109, 104, is the first negative
term?
Solution: Here AP = 114, 109, 104, …….
a= 114, d= 109-114 = -5
a n = a + (n-1) d
n> 23.8
hence 24th term is the first negative term
Q6) Find the sum of those integers between 1 and 500 which are multiples
of 2 as well as of 5.
Sol: Integers between 1 and 500 which are multiples of 2 as well as of 5 =
10, 20, 30, ……., 490
They form an AP with a = 10, d = 10, an = 490
a n = a + (n-1) d
490 = 10 + (n - 1) (10)
490 = 10 + 10n - 10
490 = 10n
n = 49
If l is the last term of an AP, then the sum of the terms is given by
S = n/2[a + l]
So, S = 49/2[10 + 490]
= 49/2[500]
= 49(250)
= 12250
Therefore, the sum of the terms between 1 and 500 which are multiples of
2 as well as 5 is 12250.
15
= 2 (248)
=1860 throws
