ABSTRACT

JOAN MAE P. BARILE, LEA ABEGAIL D. NADONG, ANNA BELLE O. ROTILLES, &
LEANCENT C. SABORNIDO, Biliran Province State University, Naval, Biliran,
Philippines; September 2024 “NURSES’ THERAPEUTIC COMMUNICATION SKILLS
AS PERCEIVED BY PATIENTS ADMITTED AT BILIRAN PROVINCIAL HOSPITAL”

This study evaluates the therapeutic communication skills of nurses as perceived

by patients at Biliran Provincial Hospital (BPH). Effective communication is vital in
nursing, influencing patient care quality and outcomes. Using a quantitative descriptive
design, data were collected from patients hospitalized for at least seven days through a
structured survey. The survey assessed nurses' general communication, interpersonal,
and assertive skills, alongside patients' socio-demographic profiles.

Results indicate significant relationships between nurses' communication skills

and patients' age, gender, and religion, but not with civil status, occupation, income, or
hospitalization duration. The findings highlight the need for comprehensive training
programs and continuous professional development to enhance nurses' communication
skills. Implementing these measures is expected to improve nurse-patient relationships
and healthcare quality at BPH.

Comprehensively, the results with the study of therapeutic communication skills of

nurses in Biliran Provincial Hospital, testing their interpersonal communication skills,
assertive communication skills and general communication skills revealed that nurses
practice the introduced communication skills as they interact with their patients, yet for
the socio demographic significance to the study, it showed that few of the variables
remained significant to the aforementioned study.

Keywords: therapeutic communication, communication skills, patient care
