Chapter 7: Testing one sample mean

This assignment provides practice in calculating and interpreting the t-test for one mean. This assignment is worth a maximum
of 6 points - to receive full credit, your assignment must be complete, neat, and legible, and you must show the steps in your
calculations. This assignment must represent only your work – please refer to the 'Academic Integrity' section of the course
syllabus. IMPORTANT: AFTER YOU’VE COMPLETED THIS ASSIGNMENT, SUBMIT ONE PDF FILE (NOT A
PICTURE FILE) OF IT BEFORE THE START OF THE LIVE (SYNCHRONOUS) LECTURE THAT WILL GO
OVER THIS ASSIGNMENT. ALSO, PLEASE NAME YOUR PDF FILE THE SAME AS THIS EXAMPLE:

Chapter 7, Exercise 31 (p. 225-226 of textbook)

31. The American Statistical Association publishes a monthly magazine sent to all of its members. This magazine
once included an article that asked, “How many chocolate chips are there in a bag of Chips Ahoy cookies?”
(Warner & Rutledge, 1999). Nabisco, the makers of these cookies, claims there are (at least) 1,000 chocolate
chips in each 18-ounce bag of cookies...

A. Calculate the mean (X ) and standard deviation (s) of the sample of bags of cookies (clearly show all of the
steps in your calculations).
1. Mean ( X)

2. s.d. (s)

B. Calculate inferential statistics (t-test for one mean)

1. State the null and alternative hypotheses (H0/H1) (allow for the possibility that the number of chips
may either be less or greater than the number claimed by Nabisco)
2. Make a decision about the null hypothesis
a. Calculate the degrees of freedom (df)

b. Set α, identify the critical values, and state a decision rule (Note: draw the distribution and indicate the
critical values and regions of rejection in the distribution)

c. Calculate a statistic: t-test for one mean

(1). Calculate the standard error of the mean (s X )

(2). Calculate the t-statistic (t)

d. Make a decision whether to reject the null hypothesis

e. Determine the level of significance

3. Draw a conclusion from the analysis

4. In 1-2 sentences, do the results of this analysis support or not support Nabisco’s claim that there are at least
1,000 chocolate chips in every bag of cookies? (Write your answer in complete sentences (not fragments)).
