PLATE TECTONICS

OVERVIEW OF
SEISMIC EVENTS
AND TECTONIC
PROCESSES
SEISMIC EVENT
A seismic event is an earthquake, or other earth
movements that occur at the same time as an
earthquake. Seismic events can also include
landslides, snowslides, tsunamis, and other earth
movements that are directly caused by an
earthquake.

Seismic events occur when the tension in the

Earth's crust causes the bedrock to slip or move
suddenly. The shock wave from a seismic event can
sometimes be felt as a vibration when it hits the
ground.
Tectonic Processes:
Seafloor spreading is a geological process that occurs when
tectonic plates move away from each other. Convection currents
in the Earth's mantle drive the movement of the tectonic plates.
When the currents rise up towards the crust's surface, the
plates move apart.

Subduction is the process that occurs when one tectonic plate

moves under another at a convergent boundary. This happens
due to gravity and differences in density. The boundary area
where this occurs is called the subduction zone.
TAKEAWAY?
EARTHQUAKES • Earthquakes are primarily caused by
the movement of tectonic plates.
• Earthquakes are also known as
quakes, tremors, or temblors. They
can be natural or caused by
humans.
• There are four different types of
earthquakes: tectonic, volcanic,
collapse, and explosion.

THE PACIFIC RING OF FIRE

• The Pacific Ring of Fire is a 40,000-kilometer-long (24,900-mile) horseshoe-shaped belt of

volcanoes and earthquakes that surrounds the Pacific Ocean. It's also known as the Circum-Pacific
Belt.
• It contains 750–915 active and dormant volcanoes, which is about two-thirds of the world's total. It
runs from the southern tip of South America, up the west coast of North America, across the Bering
Strait, down through Japan, and into New Zealand.
• The Ring of Fire is home to Earth's deepest ocean trenches, which contain active underwater
volcanoes. A calamitous eruption in the Ring of Fire could be catastrophic locally and cause global
famines by throwing up so much ash and sulfur dioxide that the planet is drastically cooled for
many months.
• The Philippines is located in the Pacific Ring of Fire and is vulnerable to frequent earthquakes and
volcanic eruptions.
