ASSIGNMENT:
PROCEDURES AND RELATED ANCHORING ACTIVITIES FOR SAFE WORKING
PRACTICES
- Anchoring procedure has a master that identifies suitable anchoring position before
entering the anchorage area. You have to conduct safe working practices that includes
anchoring planning, risk assessment, best anchoring practices and anchoring watch
keeping.
- Mooring operation may seem simple, but it can cause death to the crew member of
the ship. By ensuring safety, the crew must be careful and focus on mooring
operations to ensure safety and wear the appropriate personal protective equipment or
the (PPE). Maintaining all the mooring equipment’s such as winches and windlasses,
check the mooring ropes, and conduct a continuous inspection after mooring and etc.
Steps to ensure the safety of all those conducting mooring operation:
➤ Use appropriate lines
➤ Set an inspection system
➤ Plan operation
➤ Toolbox meeting
➤ Execute operation
➤ Post operation activities
MOORING EQUIPMENT
- It is the set of fittings and mechanisms aboard a ship that are use to warp and secure
the ship when it is moored at a dock, at the wall of a lock, to buoys, or alongside
another vessel.
Examples:
➤ Cruciform Bollard
➤ Mooring Roller
➤ Mooring Bollard
➤ Chocks
- Assemble a bank line, sinker and bridle. Put a temporary float on the bridle. As early
as possible on the flood tide, drop sinkers in the required positions being careful not
to tangle or trap the lines. As the tide rises, attach the bank lines to the ropes
previously positioned. To throw the heaving line, tie the whipped end on the rails or
on your left wrist, and then coil all the line in your left hand, using small coils. Now
transfer 1/3 of the coils including the weighted end in your right hand Swing the
heaving line in your right hand like the lasso of the cowboy and at the same time pay
off from the left hand. The swing should be at shoulder height and horizontal.
Heaving lines can be thrown up to 25 meters distance. It is advantageous to wet line
before throwing. These are lengths of rope or chain secured to bitts to facilitate taking
the mooring rope or wire from the drum and placing it on the bitts
