SF3 – UNIT 3 – FIRE: WORD FORMATION PRACTICE

Your name: ______________________

Task 1. Give correct forms of these words.
There is an _______________________ (argue) that _______________________
(recycle) may have some unforeseen
negative effects. Of course, it would be a major _______________________
(achieve) if we were able to increase _______________________ (aware) to the
threat of the environment caused by _______________________ (pollute) and the
_______________________ (burn) of fossil fuels. However, if the public’s only
_______________________ (involve) in ecological issues is taking their newspapers
and bottles to a recycling point, we may only be creating the
_______________________ (appear) of _______________________ (improve).
If they have to drive any _______________________ (distant) to the recycling
point, for example, it might mean the _______________________ (consume) of
more energy than is saved. In addition, if people feel that they are making their
_______________________ (contribute) to the environment, they might not put so
much _______________________ (press) on large _______________________
(organise) to encourage the _______________________ (develop) of safer, less
damaging forms of _______________________ (produce).
Task 2. Give correct forms of these words.

There are a number of serious _______________________

(environment) problems being covered by the media at the moment but the
one I’d like to talk about is the _______________________ _______________________
(forest) of vast areas of rainforest to grow palm oil. I’m not sure when it
started to become a concern to _______________________ (environment) but I
know that they’re increasingly worried about it.
This land _______________________ (clear) is on a huge scale and the forest is
often just burned down. This sends large amounts of greenhouse
gas _______________________ (emit) into the atmosphere which contribute
to global warming and climate change. This affects everyone on the planet.
Just as important is the effect on the native wildlife. Deforestation to grow palm
oil in Borneo and Sumatra destroys the natural habitat of orang utans as well as
many other animals. _______________________ (Conservation) estimate that
unless the situation changes, the orang utan and Sumatran tiger could
become _______________________ (extinction) in the wild in the next 5-10 years.
In fact, a third of all mammal species in Indonesia are thought to be
critically _______________________ (danger) because of this type
of _______________________ (sustain) _______________________ (develop).
Furthermore, the oil palm plantations that replace the
rich _______________________ (vegetable) of the rainforest support very low
levels of _______________________ (diverse) and create a totally a
different ecosystem. I don’t fully understand why the loss of biodiversity is such
a problem but I did read somewhere that it means that our food crops are more
vulnerable to pest and diseases. This could lead to serious food shortages in the
future.
Task 3. Read the sample essay below and give the correct forms of
words in brackets.
There are pressing environmental problems that the world faces today. Some
believe that they are outside the ambit of individuals to solve, while others
believe that unless people step up, the governments will be 1________ (able) to
solve them either. This essay will discuss both these views before concluding.
The argument is 2__________ (heavy) tilted toward individual citizens lacking
the material resources and social networks to fix 3___________ (stand)
environmental problems. There are several facets towards solving
environmental issues, notably those concerning the 4______________
(administer), governmental, regulatory, 5______________ (authorize), law and
order, and legal domains. For instance, manufacturing units keep releasing
6___________ (poison) gases into the atmosphere while 7_____________ (pollute)
rivers with toxic materials. Individuals cannot possibly combat these instances.
People may argue that every stakeholder can step up and pressure the
authorities and companies to take 8__________ (action) steps. However, this is
not a feasible solution since these companies are largely under the
9_____________ (own) of businesses and funds that only seek profits and do not
10______________ (prior) the environment.

It leads to the natural 11_____________ (deduct) that solving environmental

problems is the joint 12_____________ (responsible) of public stakeholders and
the government. The authorities should offer legal and administrative support
towards curbing pollution and other environmental issues. If any individual
wishes to notify the authorities of something harmful in their region, then steps
should be taken to streamline this provision as much as possible. Governments
may consider setting up pollution control bodies, desks in every administrative
office, random environmental 13______________ (inspect) at manufacturing
units, fines and legal provisions for a rule 14_____________ (violate), and similar
steps.

Hence, the above premise supports the argument that the government can't fix
everything unless there is sustained pressure from a section of society and
individuals. The responsibility seems to veer directly towards individual actions
collectively harnessed to pressure legislative and administrative mechanisms to
fix prevalent issues. The combined initiatives of citizens and authorities will be
the most effective solution for solving environmental problems. However, this
does not mean that individual responsibility takes a backseat until there is
government support. Individuals can contribute in numerous smaller ways
towards 15 ___________ (ecology) preservation.
