REVISION WORKSHEET(Answer key)

CLASS: 9
SUB : MATHEMATICS TOPIC : POLYNOMIALS
1) The degree of polynomial (y2 -2)(y3 + 1) is

a) 3 b) 5 c) 2 d) 6

2) If x51 + 51 is divided by x + 1, the remainder is

a) 0 b) 1 c) 49 d) 50

3) The degree of polynomial √ 2 is

a) 2 b) 0 c) 1 d) ½
4) DIRECTIONS: In each of the following questions ,a statement of Assertion is
given followed by a corresponding statement of Reason just below it. Of the
statements, mark the correct answer as
(a) Both assertion and reason are true and reason is the correct explanation of
assertion.
(b) Both assertion and reason are true but reason is not the correct explanation of
assertion.
(c) Assertion is true but reason is false.
(d) Assertion is false but reason is true

4.a) Assertion : If f(x) = x4 + x3- 2x2 + x + 1 is divided by (x – 1) , then its

remainder is 2.
Reason : If p(x) be a polynomial of degree greater than or equal to one,
divided by the linear polynomial x – a , then the remainder is p( a ) .
Ans : a
4.b) Assertion : The expression 3x4 – 4x3/2 + x2 = 2 is not a polynomial because
the term – 4x3/2 contains a rational power of x .
Reason : The highest exponent in various terms of an algebraic expression
in one variable is called its degree.
Ans : b
5) If x+ 1 is a factor of ax3 + x2 – 2x + 4a – 9, then find the value of a .

Ans : p( -1 ) = 0
a (-1)3 + (-1)2 – 2(-1) + 4a -9 = 0
-a +1 + 2+ 4a -9 = 0 ; 3a -6 = 0
a = 6/3 = 2

6) If p(x) = x2 -4x +3, evaluate p(2) – p(-1) + p(1/2).

7) If 1 and -3 are zeroes of the polynomial x3 – ax2 -13x + b, then find the values
of a and b.

8) If the polynomial az3 + 4z2 + 3z – 4 and z3 – 4z + a leaves the same remainder

when divided by z - 3 , find the value of a.
9) Check if polynomial g(t) = 4t3 + 4t2 – t -1 is a multiple of 2t +1.

10) Factorize : a) x2 + 7xy + 12y2.

x2 + 4xy + 3xy + 12y2 = (x+3y)( x +4y)

b) 84 – 2v – 2v2 = 2( v – 6 )(v + 7)

c) x2 + 7 √𝟔 x + 60 = (x+ 2√𝟔)(x+ 5√𝟔)

d) x3 -23x2 +142x -120 = (x-1)(x-10)(x-12)

e) 54 a3b – 128b4 = 2b[(3a)3 –(4b)3]

= 2b(4a-4b)(9a2 + 12ab +16b2)

11) Simplify : (x + 2) 3 + (x - 2 )3

12) Factorize 4x2 +y2 +25z2 + 4xy – 10yz – 20zx and hence find the value when
x = -1, y = 2 and z = - 3.
𝟏 𝟏
13) If 𝒙𝟐 + 3
𝟐 = 7, find value of x + .
𝒙 𝒙𝟑

14) If a, b, c are non-zero and a + b+ c = 0, then prove that

(𝒃+𝒄 )𝟐 (𝒄 +𝒂 )𝟐 (𝒂+𝒃 )𝟐
+ +
𝟑𝒃𝒄 𝟑𝒂𝒄 𝟑𝒃𝒂

15) One day, the principal of a particular school visited the classroom. The class
teacher was teaching the concept of a polynomial to students. He was very much
impressed by her way of teaching. To check, whether the students also
understand the concept taught by her or not, he asked various questions to
students. Some of them are given below. Answer them
