Lesson Plan: Testing Basic School Skills

Level: Beginner

Duration: 45 minutes

Unit: Let’s Test Our Skills

Materials: Worksheet (based on the image), whiteboard, markers, clock visuals for telling
time (optional)

Lesson Objectives:
 Vocabulary focus: School-related places, subjects, and daily routines.
 Grammar focus: Use of some/any/much for quantifiers.
 Reading comprehension: Describing routines and understanding contexts.
 Listening & Speaking: Describing daily routines and guessing favorite subjects.

Lesson Outline:

Warm-up (5 minutes):
Objective: Activate prior knowledge about school-related vocabulary.

Activity:

Greet students and ask them what places they know in a school (e.g., classroom, library).

Write their answers on the board as a mind map.

Quick 2-minute discussion: What do they do in these places? (e.g., in the library, we read
books.)

Activity 1: Vocabulary Practice (10 minutes)

Objective: Practice school-related vocabulary using fill-in-the-blank sentences.

Instructions:

Give students the first section of the worksheet (from the image, "Can you say where you do
the following?").

Go through each sentence and ask students to fill in the blanks (e.g., “You eat in the ___
[cafeteria].”).

Afterward, students can compare answers in pairs before reviewing as a class.

Extension: If there’s time, discuss why certain places are used for specific activities.

Activity 2: Guessing Game - Favorite Subjects (10 minutes)

Objective: Students will practice guessing subjects based on preferences.

Instructions:

Using the second section of the worksheet (e.g., "Ann likes singing. Her favorite subject is
___"), ask students to read each sentence and guess the person’s favorite subject (e.g.,
music).

Have students take turns reading aloud.

Group activity: Divide the class into small groups. Each group will be responsible for
guessing two or three sentences.

After 5 minutes, review answers together.

Activity 3: Daily Routines - Speaking Practice (10 minutes)

Objective: Practice daily routines using telling time and actions.

Instructions:

Refer to the third section of the worksheet. Set the classroom clock (or show images of
clocks) and ask students what Kate does at each time (e.g., “At 7:00, Kate gets up”).

Have students practice repeating sentences using the structure: *At [time], [name] [does
action]*.

Pair work: Have students discuss their own morning routines using the same structure.

Activity 4: Quantifiers (7 minutes)

Objective: Practice using "some", "any", and "much".

Instructions:

Refer to the section titled "Can you choose the right word to complete the sentences?".

Go over a few examples on the board (e.g., "Sam has ____ history books. [some]").

Have students complete the worksheet individually, then review the answers together.

Wrap-up and Review (3 minutes)

Objective: Summarize the lesson and check for understanding.

Activity:

Ask a few review questions: "Where do you eat at school?" or "What is Stacy’s favorite
subject?".
Encourage students to reflect on what they’ve learned and share what they enjoyed the
most.

Homework Suggestion:
Write a short paragraph about your daily routine at school, using time and action verbs.
