Lesson 1 The Globe And Imaginary Lines

Q1.Write short notes on the following :

1. Globe- A globe is a small model of the earth. Many places and countries are
marked on it. To find a place on the globe, we use a system of imaginary lines
running from east to west and north to south. They are known as latitudes and
longitudes respectively.
2. Prime Meridian-The meridian passing through Greenwich is called the Prime
Meridian. It is the starting point for numbering the meridian. It is marked as 0°.
The longitude of a place is measured east or west of the Prime Meridian.

Q2. Differentiate between Latitudes and Longitudes

Latitudes Longitudes
1 Latitudes are 1. Longitudes are
horizontal lines. vertical lines.

poles than the
equator.

Q3. Answer the following questions in detail:

1. What is a Grid ? How does it help us to find the location of a place?

Ans. The parallels and meridians form a network of lines on the globe. This is
called a grid. The point at which latitude and a longitude meet helps us to locate
a place. In order to find a position of a place, we must know the values of
latitudes as well as longitudes.
2. List the disadvantages of the globe.
Ans. Some disadvantages of the globe are as follows:
1. It is difficult to make and carry large sized globe.
2. Space is limited and details cannot be shown on a globe.
3. It is not possible to make a globe for a part of the earth.
4. Only one side of the earth can be seen at one time.
Globe- a globe is a small model of the earth. Many places and countries are marked
3. Write five facts about the lines of longitude or meridian.
Ans. The five facts about the lines of longitude or meridian are as follows-
1. They are imaginary lines running from north to south on the globe.
2. All meridians are of the same length.
3. Meridians help to measure distances in the east west directions.
4. Meridians cut the parallels at right angles(90°).
5. The maximum distance between any two meridians is at the equator.

4.Write five facts about the lines of latitude or parallels.

Ans. The five facts about the lines of latitude or parallels are as follows-
1. They are imaginary lines running from east to west.
2. All parallels are full circles except from the North Pole and the South Pole, these
are points.
3. The length of the parallels decreases as we move away from the equator and
towards the poles.
4. All parallels are located at an equal distance from each other.
5. Parallels neither touch nor cross one another.

5.What are the four hemispheres of Earth?

Ans . The Equator divides the earth into two equal halves :-

1. Northern Hemisphere – The upper half of the earth to the north of the equator.
2. Southern Hemisphere – The Lower half of the earth to the south of the equator.

The Prime meridian divides the earth into two halves from top to bottom:-

1. Eastern Hemisphere – The part of the earth to the east of the Prime meridian to 180
degree longitude.
2. Western Hemisphere -The part of the earth to the west of the Prime meridian to 180
degree longitude

6. Complete the following statements:

1. The Earth appears flat to us because of its large size and limitation of our eyes.
2. Latitudes and Longitudes are drawn on the Globe because these are imaginary lines,
which help to locate places.
3. Latitudes are of unequal length as compared to longitudes because when the latitudes run
from equator to poles the size decreases.

Q1. Draw and label the following:-
1. Important Latitudes ( Refer Page no : 8)
2. Longitudes showing Prime meridian(Refer Page no 9)
3. Grid indicating the location of a place.( Refer Page no 9)
